ASSIGNMENT 1- UNIT 1- MTH 145 Term 2302.

CO
Q.1- A fair die is thrown. Find the probability of getting (i) a prime number (ii) a number multiple of 2 or 3 (iii) a 1
number multiple of 2 & 3 (iv) a number greater than 4. Ans:(i)1/2 (ii) 2/3 (iii) 1/6 (iv) 1/3.
Q.2- Given two independent events A and B such that P(A B) =0.8 and P(B) = 0.4 , find (i) P(A) 1
(ii) If P(A)=0.2, P(B)=0.5, then find P(A B) (iii) If P(A)=0.4,P(B)=0.3,then find P(A‫׀‬B) and P(B‫׀‬A).
Ans: (i) 2/3 (ii) 0.6 (iii) 0.4, 0.3.
Q.3- Two cards are drawn without replacement from a pack of 52 cards. Find the probability that: 1
( i) both are red (ii) the first is a king and the second is an ace. Ans:(i)25/102 (ii) 8/663
Q.4- A pair of dice is thrown. If the two numbers appearing on them are different, find the probability that the sum of the 1
numbers is 6. Ans: (i) 5/36
Q.5- In a bulb factory, machines A, B and C manufactures 60%, 30% and 10% bulbs respectively. 1%, 2% and 3% of the 1
bulbs produced respectively by A, B and C are found to be defective. A bulb is picked up at random from the total
production and found to be defective. Find the probability that this bulb was produced by the machine A. Ans: (i)
P(E‫׀‬A)=2/5.
Q. 6. A random variable X has the following probability distribution: 1

x -2 -1 0 1 2 3
P(x) 0.1 k 0.2 2k 0.3 k
( i ) Find the value of k ( ii ) Find mean of X ( iii ) Find variance of X.
Ans:(i) 0.1 (ii) 0.8 (iii) 2.16
Q.7- A die is rolled. If the outcome is number greater than 3 .What is the probability that it is a prime number? Ans:1/3. 1
Q.8- A bag contains 8 items of which two are defective. A man selects three items at random. Find the expected of the 1
defective items he has drawn. Ans : ¾.
Q. 9- Find the Expectation of number of heads in three tosses of fair coin. Also find (i) Mean (ii) (iii) Variance. Ans 1
: (i) 1.5 (ii) 3 (iii) 0.75.
Q.10- If X is a number scored in a throw of a fair die, show that the Chebychev’s inequality gives 1
is the mean of x.
Q.11- A can hit the target 4 times in 5 shots; B 3 times in 4 shots; C twice in 3 shots. They fire a volley. What is the 1
probability that at least two shots hit. Ans: 5/6.
Q.12- Five men in a company of twenty are graduates. If 3 men are picked out of twenty at random, what is the 1
probability that at least one is graduate? Ans : 0.6
Q.13- Assume that each born child is equally likely to be a boy or a girl. If a family has two children, what is the 1
conditional probability that both are girls given that at least one is a girl? Ans: 1/3
Q.14- A candidate has to reach the examination center in time. Probability of him going by bus or scooter or by other 1
means of transport is 3/10, 1/10, 3/5 respectively. The probability that he will be late is 1/4 and 1/3 respectively, if he
travels by bus or scooter. But he reaches in time if he uses any other mode of transport. He reached late at the center.
Find the probability that he travelled by bus. Ans: 9/13
Q.15- Two cards are drawn simultaneously (or successively without replacement) from a well shuffled pack of 52 cards. 1
Find the mean, variance and standard deviation of the number of kings.
Ans : 35/221,6800/221×221,0.373.
