Thesis Proposal Contents

This document outlines the typical contents of a thesis proposal, including: 1. An introduction section that describes the research area, motivation for study, and importance. 2. A clear problem statement that identifies the specific issues or problems the research will address. 3. Objectives that define the anticipated benefits and impacts of answering the research problem. 4. A literature review that summarizes previous related work, strengths/weaknesses, and justification for further research. 5. A research methodology that defines the methods, logic steps, and details the research design, sampling, and data collection/analysis procedures. 6. Thesis proposal contents

1. Introduction

Background or introduction section provides a description of the basic facts and importance of
the research area. This may include what is your research area, the motivation that you make to
conduct the research, and how important is it for the industry you are working on or any other
industry…

2. Problem Statement

Problem statement provides a clear and concise description of the issues that need to be
addressed, what is the specific problem in that research area that you will address (e.g. low
quality and productivity, high rejection rate or defects, low performance …

3. Objectives

Objectives provide a list of goals that will be achieved through the proposed research – What are
the benefits/impacts (e.g. improved quality or productivity, minimized rejection rate or defects,
increases performance…) that will be generated if the research problem is answered?

4. Literature Review

Literature review: provide a summary of previous related research on the research problem and
their strength and weakness and a justification of your research - What is known/what have been
done by others? And, why your research is still necessary?

5. Research Methodology

Research methodology defines the research methods and logic steps - What to do and how to
solve the problem and achieve proposed objectives? Which research methods (e.g. survey,
modeling, case study …) will be used? In this section, it is vital to include the following
subheadings while expanding on them in as much detail as possible.
5.1 Research Design
Include the proposed research design of the study, whether it is a survey, experiment,
observation, secondary data of analysis, etc. Then, explain how this design will derive results.
Briefly discuss how the data will be administered and collected.
5.2 Sampling
This section should include an expanded discussion of the sample. First, discuss the population
under consideration. From where will participants be selected? Second, give the sampling
method to be used. Which specific sampling method will be used to select participants?
5.3 Data Collection and Analysis Procedures
Explain the general plan for how the data will be collected. Include any survey, interview, or
observation procedures. Also, include what statistics or analytical tools will be used for
analyzing the data, such as ANOVA, SPSS, or Minitab, if applicable.
6. Timeframe/Schedule
A project schedule table which shows detailed activities and time of accomplishment for each
activity during your thesis work
7. References
All factual material that is not original with you must be accompanied by a reference to its
source.
