The worldwide pandemic, COVID-19, brings anxiety and fear to the millions of
Filipinos. Many Filipino workers are forced to stop working and experience the ‘NO
WORK, NO PAY’ scheme. In some areas, business establishments are close due to
the Enhanced Community Quarantine. The effect of the COVID- 19 threat pushes the
government to provide financial assistance to individuals who belong to the displaced
workers and disadvantaged sectors of the community.
Mrs. Gomez, a solo parent, with three children, was one among these
individuals who received financial assistance from the government amounting to five
thousand pesos. She spent 40% of the money for their daily needs and kept the
remaining amount for future use. She planned to make something beneficial out of the
assistance given because she knew that there is no definite time when will the
pandemic end. Besides, there is no assurance that the government will continue to
4
provide cash assistance. She surveys her neighborhood as to what businesses would
be able to put up and be patronized by people of all ages.
Considering the location, the supply, and demand, she decided to have a Fruit
Shake Stall. To know whether she would gain or not in her small business, she
recorded her sales through to the number of glasses sold for the first week of her
business. She labeled the glasses with the corresponding prices: Small – Php 20.00,
Medium- Php 25.00, and Large- Php 30.00.
Small (S) 8 10 9 11 10 8 5
Medium (M) 10 9 12 9 12 10 7
Large (L) 5 4 4 6 5 3 3
Every day, before going to sleep, she counts first her money. The result is quite
positive. Her worries are somehow lessened because she can provide her family with
the basic needs whatever might happen. Mrs. Gomez thinks that everyone must save
for the future.

The philanthropist advised the principal to get the total number of students
without gadget so he could present this to his benefactors. He gave his hundred
percent assurance to support the online learning by giving a free mobile phone to
every student who does not have it. This timely support provided relief to the school
administration that education in this crucial time will continue. The principal called for
a faculty meeting to discuss and plan ways to get the needed information. They agreed
to send a questionnaire to every student with the support and assistance of barangay
officials of every barangay.

Heart of a Teacher
By: Carmen G. Advincula
It was getting late yet I could not sleep. I could still see the face of Cassy who
came late for her first-period class. Among my students in Math, she caught my
attention. Every time I gave them a test, she would ask her seatmate for a piece of
paper and borrow a ballpen at the same time. During breaks, she would just let it pass
without having snacks. Her actions bothered me a lot so it drove me to know the
reasons behind.
The next day, I entered and faced my class with a bright smile to bring a positive
atmosphere in the classroom. Since our lesson was about organizing data in a
frequency distribution table, I decided to start the lesson by gathering information
about their daily allowance excluding their fare. This, somehow, helped me know
something about Cassy’s situation. I started calling them one by one and this is the
result;
20 30 50 15 20 15 50 50 40 15
30 50 50 30 15 20 20 35 50 20
10 15 20 40 15 20 30 50 15 25
14
Upon getting the information, I learned the sacrifices of Cassy just to be in
school. She lived in a remote area. Thought of ways to help her lingered in my mind.
However, I decided not to be emotionally distracted so I continued my lesson. I
presented the data in a frequency distribution table.
45 - 50 7 47 44.5 - 50.5
40 - 44 2 42 39.5 - 44.5
35 - 39 1 37 34.5 - 39.5
30 --34 4 32 29.5 - 34.5
25 - 29 1 27 24.5 - 29.5
20 - 24 7 22 19.5 - 24.5
n = 30
I had a wonderful discussion with my students. I did not want to ruin the moment
so I left the class with another bright smile, looking forward that the plan I had in my
mind would come into reality. This is the essence of being a teacher, having a heart
for the learners.

The Presenters
By: Jimson V. Serrano
A team of aspiring
researchers was gathered to
collect data in a small
community of Sibuyan Island.
The researchers were
oriented that the data will be
used as the basis for
providing apposite livelihood
programs for the community.
They were given ample time
to collect all the data needed.
After a week, the data gathered were consolidated, organized, and tallied as to
age, sex, family size, one year estimated monthly family income, livelihood, and
geographic location. The team was then challenged to present their data appropriately.
They searched the internet on the proper ways to present their data and found out that
the graph is the most powerful tool to do the job.
The members of the team were tasked to have respective parts in the
presentation. The first member was tasked to present the age and sex of the
respondents and decided to use a bar graph to show the range of ages and a pie chart
to show sex percentage composition. The second member used a line graph to show
the trend of estimated monthly family income for a year. The third member used
histograms to show livelihood frequency per age class and scattered dots on a
geographic map to show the locations of their respondents. The last member used an
ogive to show the cumulative frequency of the average monthly income class of each
respondent. The team then prepared, practiced, and rehearsed their presentation
along with their documentation. They used clip arts and animations to make their
presentation appealing and colorful. They also prepared props and agreed to wear
business attire on the presentation proper.
17
The team’s hardships paid off when they were awarded the Best Aspiring
Researchers of the school after their presentation. With the award they received, they
acknowledged all those who cooperated and guided them with their data collection,

The ECQ caused extreme boredom to the triplets, Genesis, Commi, and Quary.
To lessen the boredom, their mother gave them a challenge. She let them gather all
their toy robots then tasked them to describe the heights of their robots. Genesis
instantly stepped forward and arranged all the 15 robots according to height. He then
picked the middlemost robot and measured its height. The robot measures 14 inches.
Commi took his turn and grouped the robots of the same height. He then measured
one of the robots on the group with the greatest number of robots and it measures 12
inches. Quarry was hesitant in his turn. Without any idea on how to start, he just started
measuring each robot’s height and recorded all his measurements. He summed it all
and got a total of 210 inches. He was about to turn in his answer but he backed off.
His answer was too far from the answers of his two brothers. After a while, he
confidently answered 14 inches. The triplets were confused and curious as to why
their answers vary. Their mother interfered when she sensed the confusion. She
clarified that all their answers were correct and their methods were all accurate.
The triplets demonstrated the most essential tool in Statistics. Genesis, Commi,
and Quary demonstrated median, mode, and mean respectively. Genesis was lucky
that they have an odd number of robots. If all the toy robots differ in height, Commi
might not have any answer. Quary executed arithmetic agility, he did not stop in just
one measurement yet performed a series of mathematical operations. The three are
different however, in Statistics, those are simply called measures of central tendency.

“Are you sure you’re going to spend all your savings just to buy that cell phone?
You hardly ate snacks in recess for a year just to save.” Dale said to Yana
“Yes. I’ve slept on that already and I am pretty sure to give it a go. Besides, it
would be very useful in my daily needs in school.” Said Yana smiling at Dale.
“Well, you know I’m just a little worried about what your parents would say when
they see your phone. I’m sure they would get cross.” Said Dale.
“Of course, they would mind, but I don’t care. It would be the only thing I could

Yana.
“We are 13 years old already, Dale. I wanted to become a doctor and earn a lot
of money. If I could sacrifice my comfort for the things I wanted, then becoming a
doctor is not impossible for me.” Said Yana.
“I cannot follow her.” Dale thought “that’s being selfish. How could she not think
of her family right now? Her parents were just depending on a little earning they get
as vendors to feed her 4 siblings. Hadn’t she thought of just giving them money to her
parents to buy medicines for her three asthmatic younger brothers, 11 years old, 10

years old, and 9 years old or she could have kept on saving to send her 8- year-old
sister to school? How she could see all these things?” Dale still deep in thought.
“Hey! What’s up with you? You’re so quiet. What are you thinking of?” Yana
asked tapping Dale’s shoulder.

Miss Roa
By: Davy M. Gonzales
All of the Grade 7 students were looking at Miss Roa’s Science exam. Some
students were smiling at the sight of it while others felt the pressure running their veins
because Science was their weakness and the thought of Miss Roa seemed to paralyze
their entire body.
Miss Roa was a perfectionist teacher and Science was her forte. She was the
kind of teacher who arrived at school an hour ahead of schedule and who left the
school with the street lights already turned on. The Science Class adored her; while,
the Star Class was divided about her - some admired her and some abhorred her. But
this didn’t at all affect Miss Roa, whose ultimate goal in life as a teacher was to
squeeze every student up to its very last drop.
The examination days were finally over. Miss Roa was at her table checking
the tests. After checking, she made a frequency distribution of the Science Class and
the Star Class test scores because she wanted to determine whether her students
mastered the learning competencies, so she could think of another teaching strategies
for possible intervention or some enrichment activities.
32
Miss Roa scrutinized the table and was very satisfied with the Science Class
performance. The class was homogeneous or made up of the same level of ability.
On the other hand, the Star Class showed otherwise. She figured out that the class
was heterogeneous or made up of a different level of ability. She expected them to be
at the same level. Upon realizing this, she promptly modified her teaching strategies
to address the learning issues of the Star Class students.
On Miss Roa’s first meeting with the Star Class students for the second quarter,
she ramified the class into six groups, each of which had above-average students.
She also encouraged the class to do peer teaching to cultivate individualized and
interactive learning. She told her students that they would be doing this until the third
quarter. Meanwhile, Miss Roa hoped for a positive outcome.
The second quarter finally came. And their Miss Roa was sitting again at her
table checking the exams. As usual, Science Class test scores brought smiles at her
face. On the other hand, the Star Class test papers were on her table waiting to be
checked.

homogenous class?
A. Majority of the students scored extremely high and extremely low scores
B. Majority of the class were clumped up in the score ranging from 36-45 and
not a lot of students had an extremely high or extremely low score.
C. Majority of the students were performing higher than expected.
D. Majority of the students performed lower than expected.
5. What made Ms. Roa think that the Star class was heterogeneous class?
A. More students that were grouped in an extremely high score and the
extremely low score.
B. Students performed better that Special Science Class.
C. The majority of students had high scores leading to higher performance of
the students
D. Scores were more compact which means students have at least equal
performance.

6. Based on the table, do you think the Star class has more above average
students than the Science Class?
A. Yes, because the star class performed better than the science class.
B. Yes, there are more students score in the score group of 46-50.
C. No, because the special science class performed better.
D. No, because the star class has students with a score of 21-30
7. What interventions did Ms. Roa provide for the Star Class during the 2 nd
quarter? Did she succeed in giving the intervention to the Star Class?
A. She continued the old way of teaching
B. She joined the Star class with the Special Science class and introduced peer
teaching.
C. She grouped the class into 6 groups and introduced peer teaching
D. She motivated the students to do better in the subject.
8. If you were Ms. Roa, would you have done the same to the star class? Why?
A. Yes, to increase the performance of the students.
B. Yes, to allow students to outperform other sections.
C. No, students should not be motivated to learn.
D. No, teachers should not give students the chance to improve.

It’s been a tiring day for a math teacher like me handling six sections. Lying on
a sofa bed while listening to the news in the television, I heard my daughters talking
about a Korean drama they had watched.
“In the reviewer, there were several items I hardly understand how to connect
the data presented in graphs, maps and tables. The graph fluctuated dramatically then
increased slightly and dropped markedly,” Dea observed consciously. Bea, my other
daughter, looking at the reviewer noticed that problem number 24 and 25 given a table
with values of mean and standard deviation in the reviewer said, “Which section
performed best during the year?
This is it, the performance of the three sections is compared in terms of mean
(X) and standard deviation (SD) of students’ scores in the achievement test.
36
A B C
X 42.5 41.65 44.9
SD 3.7 3.15 2.9
How do you use the data in answering the questions?“ Ahaha!, Bea teasingly
smiled to her sister Dea.
The Mean: “The higher the mean, the better the performance”
“Reading a graph with numbers can be much easier than reading a lengthy
description.”

It was a boring day since the ECQ was extended because of the increasing
number of infected persons due to COVID -19. After doing all errands for the day, the
three cousins - Zion, Sky, and Kurt were talking about DepEd Commons, the online
platform containing learning resources for the benefit of students, parents, and
teachers provided by the Philippines’ education department as a response to the
pandemic.
“Hello Sky. What are you thinking?” asked Kurt, the oldest among the three. “I
am thinking, why do we need to learn multiple measures of central tendency,” Sky
answered.
Since Sky and Zion are classmates, they both question why they have to study
Mean, Median, and Mode.
“Kuya Kurt, can you help us understand further these ideas?” Zion said.
“Sure! You will discover how these ideas will help you later in life,” said Kurt.
“Well, I have here a typical question for both of you,” Kurt added.
39
“Which best describes the number of times a “Popular Song” was played on the
radio per day?”
Given the following information: Sunday 10, Monday 13, Tuesday 13, Wednesday 11,
Thursday 15, Friday 3 and Saturday 9.
“I calculated that the Median is 11; the Mean is 10.6; and the Mode is 13,” Kurt
explained. “So, how should the question be answered? Is there an answer?”, asked
Zion.
“I guess it’s the Mode since I observed that 13 appeared twice in the list. That’s
simply my observation but I’m not sure how it’s really arrived at,” Sky interrupted.
“Okay, I will give you another statistical data for you to analyze and interpret. Let’s say
we are comparing the average scores of two basketball players, Scottie Thompson
and James Yap. Let’s look at these numbers altogether,” Kurt said.
Thompson Yap
Mean 12 12
Median 14 12
Mode 0 12
“When comparing Means, Thompson and Yap have the same Mean since their
average is 12 points per game. If we look at their Median scores, Thompson seems to
be the better player – his median is 14 compared to Yap’s which is 12. If we consider
their Modes, Thompson with a score of
0 and Yap with 12, it appeared that
Yap’s Mode is better than
Thompson’s,” Kurt explained.
The problem was not asked to know the right or wrong answer in mind, but
rather to see if a student can justify his/her choice. This type of question can be used
to test the student’s understanding of the concepts rather than just his/her ability to
give values.
