Physics Class TesT Collisions and Momentum

The document contains a 10 question physics test on collisions between objects. Questions 1-7 deal with elastic collisions between two objects or balls, providing the mass and initial velocity of each object and asking students to calculate the final velocity of one object after collision. Questions 8-10 deal with inelastic collisions between two cars or balls, where the objects stick together after collision, and asks students to calculate the final velocity of the combined system. Students have 40 minutes to complete the 30 point test.

Physics class test

MM- 30 marks Time- 40 min

Q1. Two billiard balls, A and B, collide elastically. Ball A has a mass of 0.2 kg and a velocity of 4 m/s
to the right. Ball B has a mass of 0.3 kg and is initially at rest. After the collision, ball A moves to the
left with a velocity of 2 m/s. Determine the final velocity of ball B. ( 3 marks)

Q2. In an elastic collision between two objects, object X with a mass of 0.5 kg and a velocity of 3
m/s to the right collides with object Y, which has a mass of 0.8 kg and is stationary. After the
collision, object X rebounds with a velocity of 1 m/s to the left. Calculate the final velocity of object
Y. ( 3 marks)

Q3. Two cars, A and B, collide inelastically. Car A has a mass of 800 kg and a velocity of 20 m/s to
the right, while car B has a mass of 1200 kg and is stationary. After the collision, the two cars stick
together. Determine the final velocity of the combined system. ( 3 marks)

Q4. A 0.1 kg ball moving with a velocity of 2 m/s collides inelastically with a stationary 0.2 kg ball.
After the collision, the two balls move together. Calculate the final velocity of the combined system.
( 3 marks)

Q5. A lighter particle moving with a speed of 10 m s-1 collides with an object of double its
mass moving in the same direction with half its speed. Assume that the collision is a one
dimensional elastic collision. What will be the speed of both particles after the collision? (
3 marks)
Q6. A 0.4 kg puck is moving to the right with a velocity of 5 m/s. It collides elastically with a
stationary 0.6 kg puck. After the collision, the 0.4 kg puck moves to the left with a velocity of 3 m/s.
Calculate the final velocity of the 0.6 kg puck. ( 3 marks)

Q7. Two objects, A and B, collide elastically. Object A has a mass of 0.6 kg and a velocity of 2 m/s to
the right. Object B has a mass of 0.8 kg and is initially moving with a velocity of 3 m/s to the left.
After the collision, object A moves to the left with a velocity of 1 m/s. Determine the final velocity of
object B. ( 3 marks)

Q8. Two objects, X and Y, collide inelastically. Object X has a mass of 1 kg and a velocity of 4 m/s to
the right, while object Y has a mass of 0.5 kg and is moving with a velocity of 2 m/s to the left. After
the collision, the two objects stick together. Determine the final velocity of the combined system. ( 3
marks)

Q9. A 0.2 kg ball moving with a velocity of 3 m/s collides inelastically with a stationary 0.3 kg ball.
After the collision, the two balls move together. Calculate the final velocity of the combined system.
( 3 marks)

Q10. Two cars, C and D, collide inelastically. Car C has a mass of 1000 kg and a velocity of 10 m/s to
the right, while car D has a mass of 1200 kg and is stationary. After the collision, the two cars stick
together. Determine the final velocity of the combined system. ( 3 marks)
