On average, more than 100,000 wildfires, also called wildland fires or forest fires, destroy two
million hectares of land in the U.S. every year. A wildfire moves at speeds of about 20 kilometers an hour
and can last for weeks, consuming everything - trees, brush, homes, and humans - in its path.
There are three conditions for a wildfire to bum: fuel, oxygen, and a heat source. Fuel includes trees,
grasses, bushes, and even homes. Oxygen is necessary for a fire to bum. Heat sources help start the wildfire.
Although most wildfires are started by people, natural factors like lightning, hot winds, and even tile sun can
all provide enough heat to start a wildfire.
Firefighters fight wildfires by removing the conditions for a wildfire to bum. Traditional methods
include using water and fire retardants to put out the fires. Firefighters also fight wildfires with "controlled
burning". These controlled forest fires remove small trees, bushes, and ground litter from a forest. This will
deprive a wildfire of fuel and prevent future forest fires.
Although often harmful and destructive to humans, wildfires play an important role in nature. Even
healthy forests contain dead trees and decaying plant matter. When a fire turns them to ashes, nutrients
return to the soil. They also remove sick plants and harmful insects from a forest. And by burning through
thick leaves and branches, wildfires allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, making it possible for a new
generation of trees to grow.

doing exams. None of them thought that the exam system was fair; to do well in an exam you simply had
to be able to predict the questions which would be asked. This was the case as regards two students in my
class at college. Both of them were exceptionally bright, but in the final year exam neither of them got an
A grade. In fact, they both got Cs. The exam had tested us on questions which had come up the previous
year. They had both assumed that the same questions wouldn’t come up again, and hadn’t prepared for
them.

not a fake, and it must be taken seriously.”, said an expert in behavioral addiction at Nottingham Trent
University. “These are not sad people with serious personality defects, they are people who were fine before
they found the Internet.”
IAS is similar to other problems like gambling, smoking and drinking: addicts have dreams about the Internet;
they need to use it first thing in the morning; they lied to their partners about how much time they spend online;
they wish they could cut down, but unable to do so. A recent study found that many users spend up to 40 hours
a week on the Internet. Although they felt guilty, they became depressed if they were made to stop using it.
Almost anyone can be at risk. Some of the addicts are teenagers who are hooked on computer games and who
find it very difficult to resist the games on the Internet. Surprisingly, however, psychologists say that most
victims are middle-aged housewives who have never used a computer before.

A shuttle is a vehicle that travels back and forth frequently. A space shuttle is a vehicle that travels into space and back
again. It can be used again and again.
On April 12, 1981, the United States launched the first space shuttle, Columbia. At 7.00 a.m., the engines were fired. The
booster rockets and the space shuttle separated. Parachutes took the rockets safely down into the Pacific Ocean, where
ships were waiting to pick them up. Columbia continued to climb on an orbit of 170 miles above the earth. The space shuttle
circled the earth 36 times. During this time, the astronauts tested the equipment on the shuttle. They also opened and closed
the large cargo doors. Two days later, they fired the shuttle’s engines. This slowed down the shuttle. John Young, a top
pilot, took the controls of Columbia. Then he made a perfect landing at Edwards Air Force base.
Since then, Columbia has traveled into space more than seven times. The second shuttle, Challenger, is also operating.
NASA is building two more space shuttles. It is planning over 60 more shuttle flights. Some will launch satellites through
the cargo doors. Some will try to manufacture drugs and chemicals in space. One will carry a large telescope that some day
in the future, space shuttles will carry passengers to the moon.

People also go to Fourth of July parades and listen to patriotic music. In the evening when it gets dark, people watch beautiful
fireworks. In most states, people cannot buy fireworks because they are dangerous. People can get hurt. So city governments
usually have safe fireworks for everyone to enjoy.
Independence Day isn’t only a day for cookouts, noise and fireworks. It is also a day to think about freedom. The Declaration
of Independence says everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence is
more than 200 years old, but its ideas are important.

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of a few speakers to become the dominant language of
international communication. English as we know it today emerged around 1350, after having incorporated many
elements of French that were introduced following the Norman invasion of 1030.
Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had not extended even as far as Wales,
Scotland, or Ireland. However, during the course of the next two centuries, English began to spread around the globe
as a result of exploration, trade (including slave trade), colonization and missionary work. Thus, small enclaves of
English speakers became established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities proliferated,
English gradually became the primary language of international business, banking, and diplomacy.
Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is in English. Two-thirds of
the world‟s science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology, advertising, media,
international airports, and air traffic controllers. Today there are more than 700 million English users in the world,
3
and over half of these are non-native speakers, constituting the largest number of non-native users than any other
language in the world.

Out in the Pacific Ocean, 3700 kilometers from Los Angeles,, are the islands of Hawaii, the fiftieth state of the
United States, with the area of 16700 square kilometers.
The first Hawaiians arrived from other Pacific islands sometime around 100 AD. Then in 1778, Captain Cook
visited Hawaii. He put the islands on his map of the Pacific Ocean. Then more ships knew Hawaii and began
stopping there for supplies.
In 1820, a small group of people from the eastern United States came to teach the Hawaiians about Christianity.
They started farms to grow sugar canes and pineapples. Because there were not enough people to do all the farm
work, farm owners brought in Asians – Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos.
Later, Koreans, Portuguese and Puerto Ricans also came. More people came from the US mainland and from other
Pacific Island, and Hawaii became an island with traditions from several countries. People from the various nation
groups have married each other, so today the groups are partly mixed.
Hawaiians are very friendly and always welcome visitors. They celebrate traditional Chinese, Japanese, and
Filipino holidays as well as holidays from the United States. Hawaii is known as the Aloha State. “Aloha” means
“hello”, “goodbye” and “I love you” in Hawaiian.

Reading is a fundamental skill builder. Every good course has a matching book to go with it. Why? Because books
help clarify difficult subjects. Books provide information that goes deeper than just classroom discussions. By
reading more books, you become better informed and more of an expert on the topics you read about. This expertise
translates into higher self-esteem. Since you are so well-read, people look to you for answers. Your feelings about
yourself can only get better. Books give you knowledge of other cultures and places. The more information you have
got, the richer your knowledge is. Books can expand your horizons by letting you see what other cities and countries
have to offer before you visit them.
