COURSE WORK: BED1104 – COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

1. Explain three parts of an email.
2. Discuss 5 features of a word processor.
3. Discuss the four stages of data processing.
4. Reproduce the document below using a word processing application and respond to the
questions below it.

Introduction
This report contains the experiences the student, Ogwang Moses, had during his attachment with
Infotech Training and Sales, a computer firm in Kampala, from the 16th of June to the 22nd of
August 2023. This was in pursuance of the requirements of the course Industrial Attachment II
(ELC 490), which is part of the program of the Bachelor of Technology in Electrical
&Communication Engineering of Kampala University.
The experience gained was about computer systems especially the system unit. This included
assembling, installing expansion boards, memory and troubleshooting. The practical experience
gained was limited by the fact that the firm underwent a change of emphasis in the period spent
there.

Microprocessor Systems
The attachment period that the student had at Infotech largely dealt with computers. It therefore
seems appropriate to begin this report with an overview of microprocessor systems. The
microprocessor itself is the central control component of a microprocessor system, or a
microcomputer, which also contains a number of other components. This part of the report
examines these components, and the way in which they and the microprocessor are
interconnected to form a working system.
System Interconnection
Three buses achieve the interconnection of various components of a microprocessor system.
These are the data bus which moves data between components, the address bus which is used by
the processor to specify the source or destination of data transferred, and the control bus which is
used to control and synchronize the data transfers and for other special purposes.

Address decoding and memory maps

The total memory of a microprocessor system is usually made up of a number of semiconductor
memory chips, together with additional to select the device providing the memory within a
particular memory range. The basic problem of designing the decoding circuitry is simple. Each
device requires a certain number of address lines to be connected to it in order to select
individual locations within the device. Thus a memory chip that stores 1MB must have 30
address lines connected to it. If the address bus of the processor comprises of 32 lines, this leaves
a number of lines which are not required for direct connection to the memory chip. These lines
are used to select between numbers of different chips. Each of a set of memory devices will be
selected by a unique pattern of bits; by ensuring that for each device there is one pattern that
selects that device and that device only, it is possible to allocate to each device a range of
addresses.
The detailed mechanism of device selection is based on a chip enable input with which memory
chip is provided. The logic signal at this input must be active for the chip to respond. It is normal
for a chip enable input to be an active low input.

i. Change the first heading to size 36, Bold, red, and Arial
ii. Change the first and second paragraph to font Tahoma, size 14, color blue and double
spacing
iii. Change the second heading i.e. Microprocessor systems to size 30, New Times Roman, bold
italic and color maroon.
iv. Change all text below the heading (4) to size 12, font Arial black, line spacing to 1.5 and
justified.
v. Insert three columns to paragraph five, justify it changing its size to 14. Drop cap the first
letter to three lines font Monotype Corsiva.
vi. Copy the first heading and the first paragraph to the end of the document. Underline words
only of the copied text.
vii. Move the heading copied in (8) above to the end of the document and double-underline it.
viii. Include a well-presented header and footer enclosed a border and shading of your own
choice.
ix. Change the case for the second paragraph to Title and first paragraph to Toggle.
x. Add page numbers to your document and save it as “internship report”.
5. Assume you are the class teacher of primary five class, and the term has ended. The learners
will be receiving their report cards in one week time. Your class has 30 learners.
a) Using any spreadsheet application, create a list of learner’s names, their various subjects that
you have assessed them.
b) Add 2 columns and compute the total and average for each learner.
c) Using rank formula, create a position column and compute their positions using the average
column.
