HISTORY
Volleyball game has a history of more than
100 years.
It is very easy and a cheaper game,
which can be played on very small levelled
ground. It was invented by William G. Mor
gan, the Physical Director of Y.M.C.A. in year
1895. First National Volleyball Championship|
was organised by Y.M.C.A. in year 1929
at Bukelin, New York. National Volleyball
Championship is organised every year after
the constitution of US Volleyball Association
in the year 1928.
Volleyball become very popular during
Second World War (1939-45). International

Volleyball Federation was founded in year 1947. First World Volleyball Championship was played
in year 1949 at Prague, Chekoslovakia. It was included in Asian Games in year 1955. India won
the Gold Medal in these Asian Games. Volleyball was introduced in India by Y.M.C.A. Volleyball
Federation of India was established in year 1950. First National Volleyball Championship was or
ganised in year 1952 at Chennai. It was introduced in Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
LATEST RULES
1. All International level matches are played to the best of five
sets
2. A team has three hits or less on the ball before turning it over the net. No player may hit the
ball twice continuously.
3. Fifth deciding) set consists of 15 points.
4. The opponent team scores 1 point for each and
every mistake performed by the other team
5. Line of attack is marked on the side of court at 75 cm with dots.
6. The team, which scores 25
points (30 points in case of men) before the other team with a dif-

BASIC SKILLS
1. Digging: It is the ability to prevent the ball from touching
one's court after a spike or attack, particularly a ball that
is nearly touching the ground.
2. Diving: Trying to play a ball falling on the ground in front.
3. Let Serve: A legal serve attempt where the ball makes
contact with the net while still managing to go over on the 13
serve receiving team's side of the court.
4. Overhead Pass: A pass with both hands open above the
forehead, and directed by the fingers.
5. Rally: A rally is the exchange of hits between the teams. The
team winning the rally gets the service.
6. Blocking: It refers to the actions taken by players standing at the net to stop or alter an op-
ponent's attack. It is classified according to the number of players involved (single, double or
triple block).
7. Boosting: It means to lift the ball up for the smasher to smash.
