Imaginary Numbers

Definition: If the square of a given number is

negative then such a number is called an imaginary
number.

Examples etc., are imaginary numbers.

We denote by the Greek letter iota ‘i’, which is transliterated as ‘i’

Thus, and

Complex Numbers

The number of the form (a + ib), where a and b are real numbers
and are known as complex numbers. The set of all
complex numbers is denoted by C.
∴ C = {(a + ib): a, b ∈ R}.

Examples

(i) If z = (5 + 9i) then Re(z) = 5 and Im(z) = 9.

(ii) If then Re(z) = and Im(z) = - 3.

PURELY REAL AND PURELY IMAGINARY NUMBERS

A complex number z is said to be

(i) purely real, if Im(z) = 0,

(ii) Purely imaginary, if Re(z) = 0

Examples

● Thus, each of the numbers 2, - 7, is purely real,

● And, each of the numbers is purely imaginary
