Methods of Curriculum Integration

This document discusses five methods of curriculum integration: project-based learning, service learning, learning centers/parallel disciplines, theme-based learning, and fusion. These methods provide ways for teachers and students to investigate issues across disciplines and help students develop skills like critical thinking.

2. SERVICE
LEARNING
It is an educational approach where a
student learns theories in the classroom
and at the same time volunteers with
an agency (usually a non-profit or social
service group) and engages in reflection
to deepen their understanding of what
is being taught
Why is Service learning
Important?
Connects student learning in the classroom with
real-world experiences in the community.
Students are more deeply engaged in their local
communities.
Gain practical skills
to develop their career and personal interests
usually more engaged citizens.
Some Examples of Service
learning
Examples of service learning are conducting a drug
awareness campaign, conducting art, music, dance
lessons for youth, organizing a fundraising event, and
tutoring.
3. Learning Centers/Parallel
Diciplines
A popular way to integrate the curriculum ns
to address a topic or theme through the
lenses of several different subject areas. In
an elementary classroom, students often
experience this approach at learning
centers.

4. Theme-Based
Some educators go beyond sequencing content and
plan collaboratively for multidisciplinary units.
Educators define this more intensive way of working
with them as “theme-based”.
Often three or more subject areas are included in
the study, and the units end with an integrated
culminating activity. Units of several weeks duration
may emerge from this process, and the whole school
may be involved.
A theme-based unit involving the whole school may
be independent of the regular school schedule.

takes place.
5. Fusion
In this method, teachers fuse skills, knowledge,
or even attitudes into the regular school
curriculum. In some schools, for example,
students learn respect for the environment in
every subject area.
Fusion:
Brings positive gains to students
Increase student’s critical
thinking skills,
Boosts self-confidence
Fosters positive attitudes.
