Assignment 01

1. Define sustainability. Explain the Three Pillars of Sustainability.

Ans Sustainability is defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
. generations to meet their own needs.”
Three Pillars of Sustainability

Pillar 01: Social Sustainability: It is the ability of a social system, such as a

country, family, or organization, to function at a defined level of social well
being and harmony indefinitely. Problems like war, endemic poverty,
widespread injustice, and low education rates are symptoms a system is
socially unsustainable.
Pillar 02: Environmental Sustainability: It is the ability of the environment
to support a defined level of environmental quality and natural resource
extraction rates indefinitely. This is the world's biggest actual problem, though
since the consequences of not solving the problem now are delayed, the
problem receives too low a priority to solve.
Pillar 03: Economic Sustainability: It is the ability of an economy to support
a defined level of economic production indefinitely. Since the Great
Recession of 2008 this is the world's biggest apparent problem, which
endangers progress on the environmental sustainability problem.
2. Define Green Building. What are the factors affecting the selection of site for green building construction?
Explain.
Ans Green building: Green building is one which use less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural
. resources, generates less waste and provides healthier space for occupants as compared to a conventional
building.
Or
green building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative
impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate and natural environment.
Factors Affecting the Site Selection for Green Building Construction based LEED System
Below are certain essential parameters that must to be taken into consideration while selecting the site:
1. Impact on the Environment
2. Connection with the Community
3. New Development is Limited
4. Transportation
5. Utilizing Open spaces
