Rev - Ex 1.relations, Functions

1. This document contains 20 math problems involving relations, functions, and their properties like injectivity, surjectivity, bijectivity, equivalence relations, and equivalence classes. The problems involve defining and analyzing relations and functions on sets of real numbers, integers, natural numbers, and subsets of sets. 2. Questions ask to determine properties of specific relations and functions, show if relations are equivalence relations, find equivalence classes, and modify functions to be bijective or onto. Problems involve algebraic manipulations and logical reasoning to analyze the given relations and functions. 3. The overall document presents a series of relation and function exercises testing understanding of key concepts like equivalence relations, injections, surjections, bijections, and

1.Write down the domain and the range of function f(x) = 𝑥−𝑎
.
2.R is a relation on Z such that (a , b) ∈ R if & only if (a – b) is divisible by 3. Show that it is an
equivalence relation. Write down all the equivalence classes of R.
3. S is a relation on R such that (a,b) ∈ S iff a ≤ b2 . Show that it is neither reflexive nor
symmetric nor transitive. If S is defined on Z , then comment on its reflexivity, symmetry
and transitivity.
4.R is a relation defined on set NxN such that (a,b) R (c,d) if & only if a + d = b + c. Show
that it is an equivalence relation.
5.How many relations & functions can be defined from set { 1,2,3 } to { p , q , r , s } ? How
many of these are injective & how many surjective ?
6. f : R+ → [ 5 , ∞ ) is a function such that f(x) = x2 + 5 . Show that it is one-one onto. Here
R+ is the set of non-negative real numbers.
