INTRODUCTION

To begin with, as a part of the curriculum, a summer internship program was to be conducted for a very short
period of time.

As my interest and curiosity were in online or digital marketing, I chose to work with a start-up company named
Sofodel. I chose the start-up company because, with it, I could explore myself. Because it is a booming industry,
the growth of digital marketing is tremendous and is expected to grow more. Due to this summer internship, I
learned every aspect of digital marketing, including business development processes, content writing, and social
media. Marketing practices have dramatically shifted with the rise of social media and the proliferation of
devices, platforms, and applications. Your prospective and current customers are trying to communicate with
you, and you can listen and respond faster and with more personalization than ever before. This shifting
environment presents new opportunities and challenges for marketers. With digital marketing, it's easy to fall
behind.

Digital marketing equips you with the tools you need to assess your organization’s social media and digital
marketing strategies and helps you identify areas for improvement. It is useful for individuals from small- to
medium-sized businesses who want to use new media as a vehicle for growth. Organizations are leveraging
digital marketing methods for successful marketing strategy implementation: inbound marketing through
publishing content online in the form of portals, podcasts, e-journals, online campaigns, social media marketing,
search services, and outbound marketing, including email marketing, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds,
and others. A recent survey of 3300 business executives from various industries indicates that, on average, 34%
of a company’s leads come from inbound marketing, compared to 22% through outbound marketing.

Embarking on the journey of a digital marketing intern at Sofodel has been a compelling exploration into the
ever-evolving landscape of marketing in the digital era. This internship has illuminated the profound shift
toward digital platforms as the harbinger of the future of marketing. It extends beyond the mere placement of
ads; it encompasses a tapestry of integrated services and channels that weave together to create a holistic
marketing approach. In this era, the custodianship of a brand doesn't solely rest with marketers but resonates
among the people interconnected across diverse digital platforms.

In the contemporary context, digital marketing emerges as a pivotal field, offering a vast expanse of
opportunities and potential for both digital marketing companies and practitioners. During my tenure, I've
witnessed a positive inclination among customers toward digital marketing techniques, indicating a significant
paradigm shift in consumer behavior.

The impact of online searches and advertisements is evident, highlighting the crucial role that digital channels
play in shaping consumer perceptions.

Brands want to establish a strong digital presence because customers prefer digital media over their traditional
counterparts.

8
Beyond being a one-way communication tool, digital media facilitates two-way interactions, transforming a
product into a brand through cost-effective means and providing myriad touchpoints for marketers. The essence
of digital platforms lies not only in engagement but also in their potential to attract and retain customers. The
impact of brand recall is magnified through a strategic digital presence, further solidifying the brand-consumer
relationship.

In tandem with the increasing importance of digital presence, the role of digital agencies has become
paramount. The surge in digital marketing consciousness is not only redefining marketing strategies but is also
proving to be a lucrative avenue for digital agencies. The correlation between digital advertising and revenue
generation is evident, with small investments yielding substantial returns, fueling the exponential growth of the
digital marketing landscape.

As a digital marketing intern at Sofodel, I have had the privilege of navigating through this transformative
terrain, gaining valuable insights into the power of digital platforms in shaping brand narratives and fostering
meaningful connections with the audience. This experience has not only deepened my understanding of digital
marketing but has also underscored its pivotal role in the contemporary marketing milieu.

21
Methods used by the company:

There are four major methods that the company uses to design its online campaigns. They are as follows:

• Search engine optimization

• Search engine marketing
• Influencer Marketing
• Social media marketing

Search engine optimization

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the organic method of ranking a website or webpage on the Google
search engine. This method does not require any kind of payment to be made to Google for the promotion of
webpages and links. Rather, it focuses on good and creative content for the promotion of websites on the
Google search engine.

The authenticity of the content and the creativity lead the website or webpage to be ranked higher in Google
searches, thus leading to the promotion of the company.

Here, content writers play a huge role, as they are given the task of writing content for the promotion of the
client’s website or webpage.

SEO can be further divided into two parts. They are as follows:

• On-Page SEO
• Off-Page SEO

On-page SEO is related to the content and the design parameters of the webpage itself. In on-page SEO, the
company deals with producing authentic and creative content and webpages for its clients. As it is in the world
of Web 3.0, the company’s webpage designers and graphic designers produce dynamic as well as interactive
websites for their clients.

Off-page SEO is related to the promotion of the website on various social media platforms as well as other
platforms like Quora and Blogger by creating and posting articles, blogs, and queries and by also providing
backlinks to the company’s website. This helps to generate leads on the company’s website and helps the
website rank better on search engines.

22
Search engine marketing

Search engine marketing, or SEM, is another method that is used by the company to market its clients' websites
on various digital platforms. Unlike SEO, which is organic in nature, SEM is inorganic in nature, i.e., the
company pays a certain sum of money to search engines like Google to promote its client’s website.

There are a number of tools for search engine marketing. They are as follows:

• Google Adwords.
• Google Analytics.
• Mail Chimp.
• Meet Edgar.
• Hoot suite

Social media marketing

Social media marketing is the use of social media platforms to connect with your audience to build your brand,
increase sales, and drive website traffic. This involves publishing great content on your social media profiles,
listening to and engaging your followers, analyzing your results, and running social media advertisements.

The major social media platforms (at the moment) are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest,
YouTube, and Snapchat.

There are also a range of social media management tools that help businesses get the most out of the social
media platforms listed above. For example, Buffer is a platform of social media management tools that can help
you achieve success with your social media marketing. Whether you want to build a brand or grow your
business, we want to help you succeed.

Benefits of Social Media Marketing:

• Better awareness of your business and brand

• High website traffic
• More sales leads
• Increased sales
• Good customer engagement
• The chance to better understand customers

23
Influencer marketing

Influencer marketing can be defined as a form of marketing in which the focus is placed on specific key
individuals rather than the target market as a whole. Traditionally, when people think of influencer marketing,
they think of a celebrity appearance in a TV commercial or a famous person posing on a billboard along a
highway. Companies hope that by showcasing people of interest to their target markets, consumers will be more
inclined to try the product or service that the company offers.

As media and technology have become more advanced, companies can choose from a range of outlets to market
their products. These options have also led to the evolution of social media influencer marketing. Now you can
find people representing companies through branded content on personal social media accounts, such as
Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and YouTube. More than ever, consumers are looking to fellow consumers to
inform their purchasing decisions.

Business strategy of Sofodel

Digital marketing

Digital marketing is all about using data to realize marketing objectives. It is the art of using consumer insights
to formulate marketing strategies targeted at particular groups of customers online. Digital marketers leverage
digital channels such as search engines, social media, emails, and websites to help their clients connect with
existing and potential customers. They then proceed to collect data gathered from these digital channels (such as
checking the number of impressions or likes on Instagram) and Google Analytics to plan their marketing
strategy. The advantage of using data to sell online is that it allows companies to make calculated marketing
decisions. Knowing who to target and where to sell online gives digital marketers the ability to estimate budget
spend for a certain set of return on investment (ROI) goals. Whether it’s inbound marketing or digital marketing
for clients, common KPIs for digital marketers include increasing brand awareness, lead generation, and
conversions across different digital marketing channels.

• PPC (pay per click): we use this term for paid advertisements.
• CTR (click-through rate): This term is used to determine the percentage of clicks on a link.

• SEO (search engine optimization): We use this term to improve the website’s ranking.

• SMM (social media marketing) We use this term for marketing on platforms like Facebook, Twitter,
LinkedIn, etc.

• SEM (search engine marketing): this term revolves around search engines like Google, Bing, etc.

• SERP: Search engine result page, pages that display on any search engine’s list with a specific keyword.

Advantages of digital marketing

1. Digital marketing has proven recession-proof in times of global economic slowdown. Digital marketing
strategies gave a respite to marketing companies during the recession when Traditional marketing tools
proved to be helpless.
2. Digital media marketing strategies are far more cost-effective than the traditional marketing media tools.
3. Online marketing strategies don’t require long-standing commitments. Instead, on-line Media-promoting
tools like PPC ads are often modified on a regular basis.
4. Online media marketing output is easily traceable. Digital promotion media have a high degree of
quality. Thus, planning a target-oriented digital media promotion program becomes easier.

36
5. Digital media marketing has transformed the marketing industry. Online promoting includes the use of
transportable and net technology, which provides an inexpensive medium to ascertain direct contact with
the shoppers.
6. Digital media marketing tools are more accessible. Therefore, the speed of response is way higher
compared to standard media.

The crux of digital marketing lies in its ability to collect and analyze data from diverse digital channels. Digital
marketers delve into metrics such as impressions on social media platforms or click-through rates (CTR) to
gauge the effectiveness of their campaigns. Google Analytics, a powerful tool, aids in understanding website
performance, allowing marketers to refine their strategies based on user behavior and engagement. This data-
driven approach empowers marketers to make calculated decisions, from identifying target audiences to
estimating budget allocations for specific return on investment (ROI) goals.

Key Digital Marketing Terms: Decoding the Language of the Digital Landscape

1. Understanding the language of digital marketing is crucial for practitioners in the field. Here are some
key terms:
2. PPC (Pay Per Click) refers to paid advertisements where advertisers pay a fee each time their ad is
clicked.
3. CTR (Click Through Rate): measures the percentage of clicks on a link, indicating the effectiveness of
an ad or campaign.
4. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) involves strategies to improve a website's ranking on search engine
result pages.
5. SMM (Social Media Marketing) encompasses marketing efforts on social media platforms like
Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
6. SEM (Search Engine Marketing): Focuses on marketing through search engines such as Google and
Bing.

keyword.

Digital marketing has proven to be recession-proof, providing a lifeline to marketing companies during
economic downturns when traditional marketing tools faced challenges. The cost-effectiveness of online
marketing strategies, coupled with their adaptability, has been a game-changer. Unlike traditional marketing
commitments, online strategies, such as pay-per-click (PPC) ads, can be modified regularly to align with
dynamic market conditions.

The traceability of digital marketing output is a significant advantage, allowing marketers to measure and
analyze the impact of campaigns with a high degree of accuracy. This traceability, combined with the
transformative nature of digital media marketing, has ushered in a new era in the marketing industry. The
integration of portable and internet technologies has provided an affordable medium for direct customer
engagement, reshaping the way businesses connect with their audiences.

37
Accessibility is another hallmark of digital media marketing tools. Compared to traditional media, the speed of
response in the digital realm is significantly higher. This accessibility, combined with the versatility of digital
channels, enables marketers to adapt swiftly to changing market dynamics and consumer behaviors.

In conclusion, digital marketing is not just a set of strategies; it is a dynamic and transformative force that
shapes how businesses connect with their audiences. From decoding key terms to understanding the advantages
in both recession and growth periods, this comprehensive exploration provides insights into the intricate world
of digital marketing. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the ability to harness data-driven strategies
will remain at the forefront of successful marketing endeavors.

Due to this summer internship, I learned every aspect of digital marketing, including business development
processes, content writing, and social media. Marketing practices have dramatically shifted with the rise of
social media and the proliferation of devices, platforms, and applications. Your prospective and current
customers are trying to communicate with you, and you can listen and respond faster and with more
personalization than ever before. This shifting environment presents new opportunities and challenges for
marketers. With digital marketing, it's easy to fall behind. Digital marketing equips you with the tools you need
to assess your organization’s social media and digital marketing strategy and helps you identify areas for
improvement. It is useful for individuals from small- to medium-sized businesses who want to use new media as
a vehicle for growth. Organizations are leveraging digital marketing methods for successful marketing strategy
implementation: inbound marketing through publishing content online in the form of portals, podcasts, e-
journals, online campaigns, social media marketing, search services, and outbound marketing, including email
marketing, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds, and others. A recent survey of 3300 business executives
from various industries indicates that, on average, 34% of a company’s leads come from inbound marketing,
compared to 22% through outbound marketing.

Study 1

Neelika Arora, 32 has published a research article entitled “Trends in Online Advertising” in Advertising
Express, December 2013. Global online advertising revenues are expected to touch US $10 billion by 2015. In
India, the revenues at present are estimated to be Rs. 80 crore and are expected to increase six times more within
the next five years. In India, the Internet as a medium is accepted by a wider industrial segment that includes

39
automobiles, telecom, education, banking, insurance, credit cards, FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods),
apparel and clothing, durables, media, business services, and tourism. Out of these, it is estimated that the
banking, FMCG, and insurance sectors together account for 45% of the total advertising spend. In comparison
to this, automotive, travel, and retail spend 37% of the total advertising revenue, while financial service
companies spend only 12%. Some of the top spenders in India are automobiles, followed by brands like
Pepsodent, Kellogg, Cadbury, HDFC (Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd.) loans, and Sunsilk. In
addition to these, the early adopters in the fields of finance and IT are also increasing their spending. Globally,
the trend is that almost 60% of the revenue goes to five firms: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL (America Online
Launchers), and Overture. Approximately 90% of Google's revenues come from advertising. In India, portals
like indiatimes.com, exchange4media.com, rediffmail.com, agencyfaqs.com, etc. are attracting major online
shoppers. This article explains the demographic profile of Indian users. It also gives a comparison between the
global trend and the Indian trend, which is useful for my research work.

Study 2

"According to Garder’s survey (2013), the top priority in digital marketing investment will be to improve
commerce experiences through social marketing, content creation and management, and mobile marketing. Key
findings also revealed that a company’s marketing success relies mostly on their website, social marketing, and
digital advertising, which are all parts of digital marketing. In addition, savings made by using digital marketing
can be reinvested elsewhere. Normally, companies spend 10 percent of their revenue on marketing and 2.4
percent on digital marketing, which will increase to 9 percent in the future.

Study 3

J. Suresh Reddy has published an article in the Indian Journal of Marketing. The title of the article is “Impact of
E-commerce on Marketing." Marketing is one of the 22 business functions most dramatically affected by
emerging information technologies. The Internet is providing companies with new channels of communication
and interaction. It can create closer yet more cost-effective relationships with customers in sales, marketing, and
customer support. Companies can use the web to provide ongoing information, service, and support. It also
creates positive interactions with customers that can serve as the foundation for long-term relationships and
encourage repeat purchases.

Study 4

The Economic Times published an article on “Indian companies using digital marketing for competitive
advantage” in October 2014. According to this article, a growing number of marketers in India are leveraging
digital marketing to increase their competitive advantage, as research by Adobe and the CMO Council has
revealed. According to the study, India leads in confidence in digital marketing as a driver of competitive
advantage. Ninety-six percent of Indian marketers have high confidence in the ability of digital marketing to
drive competitive advantage. It is among the highest in Asia-Pacific APAC, with only Australia leading with 97

40
percent, the research said. However, while Indian marketers believe that the key driver to adopting digital is a
growing internet population (70 percent in India against 59 percent in APAC), their belief that customer
preference and digital dependence drive the adoption of digital and that digital can engage the audience is lower
than the APAC averages, it added.

41
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The descriptive research design is used for analyzing and studying the process of digital marketing. It is very
simple and more specific than an explanatory study. The descriptive study is a fact-finding investigation with
adequate interpretation. The descriptive study aims at identifying the various characteristics of the problem
under study. It reveals potential relationships between variables and also sets the stage for further investigation
later. The results of such research are not usually useful for their decision-making, but they can provide
significant insight into a given situation. Although the results of qualitative research can give some indication as
to "why," "how," and "when something occurs, they cannot tell us how often" or "how many. The research
conducted was observational.

Data Sources:

Secondary Data:

Secondary data is collected from already-existing sources in various organization brochures and records.
Secondary data for the study were collected from magazines, websites, and other previous studies. To meet the
objectives, the study used qualitative research. The descriptive study was done through a review of existing
literature that helped in the validation and extraction of the important variables and factors. Data was collected
from secondary sources. Secondary sources were websites, books, office executives, and company data.

CHALLENGES FACED
Embarking on an internship in the digital marketing department can be both exciting and challenging for
individuals looking to gain practical experience in this dynamic field. Throughout my internship, I encountered
various common challenges that are not only intrinsic to the learning curve but also reflective of the ever-
evolving nature of the digital marketing landscape.

1. Lack of Practical Experience:

Interns often find themselves in a position where theoretical knowledge acquired in classrooms needs to be
translated into practical skills. Familiarizing oneself with the plethora of tools, platforms, and strategies used in
digital marketing can be initially overwhelming, requiring a proactive approach to hands-on learning.

2. Information Overload:

The vastness of the digital marketing domain can lead to information overload. Interns are inundated with
diverse concepts and strategies, from SEO and social media marketing to analytics and content creation.
Navigating through this wealth of information demands a structured approach to learning, focusing on
foundational concepts before delving into more complex topics.

3. Unclear Assignments:

Ambiguity in assignments can pose a significant challenge. Interns may be tasked with projects without clear
instructions or expectations, leading to confusion and potential obstacles to task completion. Clear
communication with supervisors becomes crucial to ensuring interns understand their roles and responsibilities.

4. Limited Training Opportunities:

Inadequate training opportunities can hinder interns' ability to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and
practical application. A comprehensive training program is essential for interns to gain hands-on experience,
fostering a deeper understanding of the nuances of digital marketing practices.

5. Keeping Up with Industry Trends:

47
The rapid evolution of the digital marketing industry necessitates a continuous commitment to staying informed
about the latest trends and technologies. Interns face the challenge of keeping pace with industry developments,
requiring proactive efforts to engage in continuous learning and adaptability.

6. Time Management:

Juggling multiple projects and meeting deadlines can be a significant challenge for interns. Effective time
management is essential to ensuring the quality and timeliness of their work. Learning to prioritize tasks and
allocate time efficiently becomes a valuable skill to develop during the internship.

7. Building Professional Relationships:

Building professional relationships within the digital marketing team and the larger organization can be a
gradual process. Networking and establishing connections require time and effort. Interns need to actively
engage with team members, seek mentorship, and participate in team activities to integrate seamlessly into the
professional environment.

8. Handling feedback and constructive criticism:

Feedback is a crucial component of professional growth, but interns may find it challenging to receive
constructive criticism. Learning to accept feedback positively and using it as a tool for improvement is a skill
that interns need to cultivate throughout their internship journey.

Addressing these challenges requires a proactive attitude, open communication with supervisors, and a
commitment to continuous learning. Interns should actively seek out training opportunities, ask for clarification
when needed, and leverage the knowledge and experience of the digital marketing team. By embracing these
challenges as opportunities for growth, interns can maximize their internship experience and emerge with a
solid foundation for a successful career in digital marketing.

Overall, I found this internship experience to be positive, and I am sure I will be able to use the skills I learned
in my career later. I also gained experience working in a corporate environment and collaborating with other
