Automatic Light and Wiper

This document provides the basic diagnostic procedure for diagnosing issues with the automatic light and wiper system on a Subaru Impreza. It begins with interviewing the customer to understand when and how the trouble occurred. It then checks for diagnostic trouble codes related to the LAN system, rain/light sensor, and body integrated unit. A series of inspections of the light sensor, rain sensor, and combination switches are then performed. If no issues are found, it checks operation without auto mode. Finally, it performs diagnosis of any diagnostic trouble codes, repairs the issue, and confirms the system is operating normally.

AUTOMATIC LIGHT AND WIPER (DIAGNOSTICS) > General Description

CAUTION

1. AIRBAG SYSTEM
When removing airbag related parts, refer to Cautions for Airbags. Ref. to AIRBAG
SYSTEM>General Description>CAUTION.

2. RAIN/LIGHT SENSOR
Dirt, crack, damage must not exist around the sensor on windshield glass.
Always perform the sensor initialization, when the sensor is removed or replaced. At this time, wipe
off any dirt on the windshield glass surface with a cloth.
Do not touch the silicone sheet surface directly with fingers.
Before reusing the rain sensor, wipe off the dirt on the windshield glass sensor with a cloth.
Attach the sensor within the application surface of the silicon sheet.
Protect the sensor from dust and avoid any ingress of water into it.
Do not use the parts that are dropped, even if there is no visible external damage, since the inside
may be damaged.
Check that the bracket and glass adhesion is not coming off.
The combination switch (wiper) must be OFF, when performing the car wash.
If the glass surface is frozen, the control is changed into INT mode.
If the sensor temperature is not within acceptable range (−15 — 80°C (5 — 176°F)), the control is
changed to fail safe condition, and the wiper may not operate.
When the “Rain drop Detection Sensor Setting” of body integrated unit registration is set to OFF, the
automatic operation does not operate, even though you change the switch to AUTO.
When the combination switch (wiper) is changed to AUTO, the wiper will move once even when it is
not raining.
When the AUTO volume switch of the combination switch (wiper) is changed to + side, the wiper
will move once even when it is not raining.
