Spikes of High CPU Utilization On StratixSwitch With SNMP Enabled

This document discusses spikes in CPU utilization seen on Stratix switches after upgrading the firmware and enabling SNMP. The SNMP mib flash cache feature, added automatically with SNMP, can cause high CPU usage. The solutions are to disable the cache with "no snmp mib flash cache", downgrade the firmware, or disable SNMP completely.

Spikes of High CPU Utilization on Stratix

Switch with SNMP Enabled

Document ID BF25542

Summary
Spikes of High CPU Utilization on Stratix Switch with SNMP Enabled

Problem
What is causing high CPU usage on my Stratix switch?
Why does the output of show processes cpu history show peaks at 99% or
100% throughout?
Why do I see CPU overutilization while gathering information via SNMP after
upgrading the Stratix switch?

Environment
Stratix 8000 switches
Stratix 5700 switches
Stratix 5400 switches
Stratix 5410 switches
15.2(7)E firmware
15.2(7)E1a firmware
15.2(7)E2 firmware

Cause
Starting in firmware 15.2(7)E, the option snmp mib flash cache is automatically added
to the switch configuration when SNMP is enabled. This feature can cause spikes of high
CPU activity. This may trigger alarms if the CPU usage level is being monitored. Even if
removed, the snmp mib flash cache option will return to the configuration after a
reboot or a power cycle.

Solution
Below are listed possible workarounds for high CPU utilization caused by the Snmp
flash cache process:
Issue the command no snmp mib flash cache via CLI. This will need to be manually
repeated after each reload of the switch.
Downgrade to 15.2(6)E2a or lower firmware.
Disable SNMP on the switch.

Stratix switches, see Troubleshooting High CPU Utilization on the Cisco website.
