Lab 2 Testing A Leaf For Starch

The document summarizes a lab experiment on photosynthesis. The aim was to investigate the presence of starch in a leaf. Materials included a leaf sample, boiling tube, ethanol, iodine solution, and other apparatus. The leaf was boiled in ethanol, removing its color, then tested with iodine, which turned blue/black, indicating the presence of starch produced through photosynthesis. The experiment showed photosynthesis occurred in the leaf.

Lab #2

Date:

Title: Photosynthesis (Nutrition)

Aim: To investigate the presence of starch in a leaf

Apparatus and Materials: leaf sample, boiling tube, test tube rack, 250ml beaker, 100ml measuring cylinder,

Bunsen burner, tripod stand, ethanol, iodine solution, white tile, dropper

Method: - The leaf sample was cut into pieces that would fit into the boiling tube

- Ethanol was poured into the boiling tube to cover the leaf sample.
- This was then placed in a water bath and brought to a boil.
- The boiling tube was removed from the water bath when the ethanol turned green in colour.
- The leaf sample was placed on the white tile.
- Iodine was dropped onto the sample and changes observed.

Results and Observations: The ethanol evaporated from the boiling tube after a short period of time. Prior to that,
the ethanol changed from being transparent to being bright green in colour. The leaf colour also changed from bright
green to a much more pale shade of green. The iodine solution changed to a blue/black colour when placed onto the
leaf sample. The leaf was also very brittle and easy to break.

Discussion: What is photosynthesis?

Why did the ethanol turn green in colour?

Why did the leaf become brittle and fragile?

Would you expect all leaves to store starch?
