I. Learning Competency:
 Differentiates algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities and illustrates
linear equation and inequality in one variable (M7AL-llh-4)

II. Key Concepts:

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS, EQUATIONS and INEQUALITIES

Algebraic expression – is a mathematical phrase that uses variables,

numerals, and operation symbols.
Algebraic equation – is a statement that the two numbers or two expressions
are equal
Inequality – is a mathematical sentence that contains the symbols >,<, ≥, ≤, or ≠

Algebraic Expressions Algebraic Equations Mathematical

Inequality
x+2 3+2=5 3x + 1 < 0
2x - 5 2x – 5 = 4 –1 > 2 – x
x x=2 x–3≤5
7 7=3–x Y≥8
¾x–4 x + 3 = 2x - 4 m–3≠m–2

First Degree Equations in one Variable

First degree equations in one variable is an equation that can be written in the
form ax + b = c, where a and b are constants and a ≠ 0.
Remember the letter x represents a variable of degree 1.

First Degree Inequalities in one Variable

First-degree inequality in one variable that has a degree of one and uses one
variable and any of the symbols >, <, ≤ and ≥, instead of the equal ( = ) sign.

III. Guided Practice:

Examples of First Degree Equations in one Variable:
1. 3x + 4 = 7 is a first degree equation in one variable.
It uses only one variable which is x and has a degree of 1.
2. 3m + 5 = 2m + 4 is a first degree equation in one variable.
It uses only one variable which is m and has a degree of 1.
3. 7a – 9b = 0 is not a first degree equation in one variable.
It uses two variables which are a and b.
4. x2 + 7x + 12 = 0 is not a first degree equation in one variable.
It uses only one variable which is x but it has a degree of 2.

4
Examples of First Degree Inequalities in one Variable:

1. 5x - 7 > 8 is a first degree inequality in one variable.

It uses only one variable which is x and has a degree of 1.
The inequality symbol “>“ is read as “is greater than”.
2. 4x + 2 < 5x + 3 is a first degree inequality in one variable.
It uses only one variable which is x and has a degree of 1.
The inequality symbol “< “ is read as “is less than.”
3. 2x – 2y ≥10 is not a first degree inequality in one variable.
It uses two variables which are x and y.
The inequality symbol “≥” is read as “is greater than or equal to”.
4. x2 – 4y ≤ 6 is not a first degree inequality in one variable.
It uses only one variable which is x but it has a degree of 2.
The inequality symbol “≤” is read as “is less than or equal to”.

IV. Independent Practice

Activity 1. Let’s Match it Up!
The table below show the three columns: A, B and C. Column A contains algebraic expressions,
Column B contains algebraic equations while Column C contains inequalities. Compare the
items under each column and answer the questions that follow. Write your answer on your sheet
of paper.
Column A Column B Column C
(Algebraic Expressions (Algebraic Equations) (Inequalities)
2x + 5 2x + 5 = 9 2x + 5 >8

x–3 x–3=8 x – 3 < 10

x+7 x + 7 = 12 x + 7 ≥ 12

3y – 1 3y – 1 = 5 3y – 1 ≤ 5

x+8 x + 8 = 12 x + 8 ≠ 14

Questions:
1. How are items in Column B differ from that of Column A?

2. How are items in Column B differ from that of Column C?

3. What symbol is common in all items of Column B?

4. What are the Inequality symbols used in column C?

Activity 2. Who Me!

Identify the following examples if it is an algebraic expressions, algebraic equations or inequality.
