Research Proposal

This research proposal aims to investigate strategies and interventions to enhance reading fluency in Grade 2 pupils. The study will use a mixed methods approach to identify factors contributing to reading difficulties, explore proven instructional methods, and evaluate their effectiveness in improving fluency and comprehension. Guided by the Simple View of Reading model, the research hypothesizes that targeting decoding and linguistic comprehension skills will significantly improve fluency and comprehension. The methodology outlines literature review, data collection, intervention implementation, analysis, and report writing over 12 months. The expected conclusion is that effective strategies can lead to significant gains in Grade 2 reading ability.

Working Title: Enhance Reading Fluency in Grade 2-Strategies and Intervention

Abstract:

The purpose of this research proposal is to investigate strategies and interventions aimed at
enhancing reading fluency in Grade 2 pupils. The study will explore the impact of variuos instructional
methods on improving reading fluency and comprehension skills. Through comprehensive examination of
existing literature, this research aims to provide educators and policy-makers with evidenced-based
strategies for promoting reading fluency in early elementary school settings.

Introduction:

Reading fluency is a crucial skill that serves as a foundation for academic success and lifelong
learning. Grade 2 is a critical stage in child’s reading development, as students transition from learning to
read to reading to learn. However, many Grade 2 pupils struggle with reading fluency, which impede their
overall academic progress. This research proposal aims to address this issue by investigating effective
strategies and interventions that can enhance reading fluency in Grade 2 pupils.

Goals:

The methodology that I will be going to use is a mixed‐method approach, combining both quantitative and
qualitative methods. This method will allow to gather both numerical data and rich qualitative information
to gain a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness and impact of different strategies and
interventiions.

In doing the quantitative method the aid of survey questionaires will be use to get a numerical
data that will my invetigation reliable.

1. To identify the factors that contribute to reading fluency difficulties in Grade 2 pupils.

2. To explore various instructional strategies and interventions that have been proven to enhance reading
fluency.

3. To evaluate the effectiveness of identified strategies and interventions in improving reading fluency and
comprehension in Grade 2 pupils.

Conceptual Framework or Background and / or Theoretical Framework or Background

This research proposal will be guided by Simple View of of Reading model, which posits that
reading comprehension is determined by 2 components: ( word recognition) and linguistic comprehension
(understanding the meaning of words and simple sentences). By focusing on intervention that target both
decoding and linguistic comprehension skills, this study aims to enhance reading fluency in Grade 2
students.

Hypothesis:

It is hypotized that implementing evidenced‐based strategies and interventions that target

decoding and linguistic comprehension skills will result in a significant improvement in reading fluency and
comprehension among Grade 2 pupils.

Methodology:
Timetable:

Literature Review: Month 1

Data Collection (pre‐test) Month 2

Intervention Implementation: Month 3‐6

Data Collection: (post‐test): Mionth 7

Data Analysis and interpretation: Months 8‐9

Report Writing and Conclusion: Months 10‐12

Expected Conclusion, Implication or justification:

Based on the findings of this research, it is expected that implementing effective
strategies and interventions will lead to a significant in reading fluency and comprehension
among Grade 2 pupils. The results of this study can inform educators, school administrators and
policymakers about evidenced‐based practices that can be implemented to enhance reading
fluency in early elementary school settings.
