Welcome to the English Grade 1 Self Learning Module on Listening to Short


Stories/Poems and Retelling the Story Listened to!
This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of

Welcome to the English 1 Self-Learning Module on Listening to Short Stories/Poems


and Retelling the Story Listened to!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for

the problem and solution to the short stories/poems

problem.

LESSON

Today let us talk about how to Listen and Retell Short


Stories and Poems Listened to.
Listening and retelling stories are fun and engaging
activities. Listening is hearing what others say and
understanding it. Retelling is telling again what you have

heard or listened to. Here are some things you need to do
when you listen.

1. Open your ears. Ears are used for listening.


When someone is reading a story, we

2. Close your mouth. When someone is


reading a story, keep quiet.

3. Look at who is reading. Look at the person


who is reading. Don’t look around. Stay
focus.

4. Understand what you are listening to.

There are important things you need to remember


when retelling a story. First, listen attentively to the story.
Next, remember the beginning, middle and last event.
Last, retell the story using your own words. Retelling is a
good way to check whether you understood what you’ve
listened to.

Guided Practice
Listen as I recite a poem. (Teacher recites the poem alone)

The Stars
I see the stars
They twinkle at night.
I feel like crying
When I do not see their
light.

It’s a beautiful poem. I will recite it again and listen


very well. Keep quiet and focus on the poem that I am to
recite.
(Teachers recites the poem again).
What is the poem about?

When do we see the stars?
>We see the stars at night.
What stars do at night?
>Stars twinkle at night.

Have you seen a seed? What do you do with the


seed? For example, a pechay seed. Yes, you have to plant
the seed. Planting makes the environment green.

Listen to the poem entitled “A Little Seed”. Remember
to follow the tips in listening.

too. She drinks milk everyday.

Directions: Listen to the short story. Then retell it by filling the
