Tutorial 3 Probability

This document provides a tutorial on probability with 12 practice problems. It begins with foundational probability questions like finding the probability of drawing a black or white ball from a bag. It then covers more complex topics like the probability of blood types in a population, drawing cards from a deck with certain outcomes, and conditional probabilities relating to defective products from different machines. The tutorial aims to help students learn and practice calculating probabilities of simple and compound events.

Tutorial-3 Probability
1 From a bag containing 10 black and 20 white balls, a ball is drawn at random. What is the
probability that it is i. black ii.White?
2 What is the probability of getting a sum of 7 when two dice are thrown?
3 An urn contains 3 red and 7 white balls. A ball is drawn at random from the urn and in its
place a ball of other colour is put. If now one ball is drawn from the urn, find the probability
that it is red.
3 Consider the experiment of selecting a playing card from a deck of 52 playing cards. Each
card corresponds to a sample point with a 1/52 probability.
a. How many sample points are there in the event that a king is selected?
b. How many sample points are there in the event that a diamond is selected?
c. How many sample points are there in the event that a non-face card (non-jack, non-queen,
or non-king) is selected?
Find the probabilities associated with each of the events in parts (a), (b), and (c) (to 2
decimals).
5 The following table shows the probabilities of blood types in the general population
A B AB O
Rh + 34% 9% 4% 38%
Rh - 6% 2% 1% 6%
a. What is the probability a person will have type O blood?
b. What is the probability a married couple will both be Rh - ?
c. What is the probability a person will have type B blood given he or she is Rh+?
6 From a pack of cards, three cards are drawn at random. Find the probability that each card is
from different suit.
7 1 1
A and B are two independent events and 𝑃(𝐴) = 2 , 𝑃 (𝐵) = 5find 𝑃(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵).
8 Two unbiased dice are thrown. Find the probability that(i) both dice show the same digit. (ii)
the sum of the scores is a prime number
9 A teacher gave her students of the class two tests namely maths and science. 25% of the
students passed both the tests and 40% of the students passed the maths test. What percent of
those who passed the maths test also passed the science test?

10 A bag I contains 4 white and 6 black balls while another Bag II contains 4 white and 3 black
balls. One ball is drawn at random from one of the bags, and it is found to be black. Find the
probability that it was drawn from Bag I.
11 In a bolt factory, three machines M₁, M₂, and M₃ manufacture 2000, 2500, and 4000 bolts
every day. Of their output 3%, 4%, and 2.5% are defective bolts. One of the bolts is drawn
very randomly from a day’s production and is found to be defective. What is the probability
that it was produced by machine M₂?
12 From well shuffled pack of 52 playing cards, one card is drawn. What is the probability that
(i) It is either red card or black card (ii) it is either a jack or an ace card (iii) it is either red
card or spade card
