Attendance Policy

Attendance is mandatory. This is a lecture/ studio lab class. Time in class is essential to
your development and retention of the material.
-I take attendance at the beginning of each class.
-If you are not present when I call your name, you will be marked absent.

3 | Page
-If you come in late, please wait until I have a free moment to notify me that you are
present.
- if you are late, it is your responsibility to make sure I mark you here on the day the
tardy took place. If you forget and come back to me another day to reconcile your
attendance, I will not change your attendance.

3 Tardies = 1 absence
-Four (4) absences will result in a failing grade for the semester.
-Attendance marks the start of class. Any student arriving more than 15 minutes
after the start of class or leaving 15 minutes before class is dismissed will be
considered absent

If an absence or tardy occurs because of circumstances beyond your control, please

provide me with valid paperwork to justify the absence or tardy.

Do not email me to ask for work/materials that you missed while you were absent. I
will not go over 3 ½ hours’ worth of material via email. Always check D2L for
assignments on the days you missed and/or contact a classmate. Bring valid
paperwork to excuse your absence the next time you attend class, for the days you
missed, and I will go over the assignments in person.

Cell phone policy

Cell phones can be used for:
-take photos of still life set ups
-record lectures
-take notes
-search the web for work references
-listen to music while working with headphones

During class:
-No phone calls in class. Step into the hallway to answer, make calls, or send texts.
-No video game usages
-No video watching unless it directly relates to the specific assignment we are working on.

Grading Policy
• All assignments must be completed and presented properly on the due date.

• Late assignments will lower your grade ½ a grade every week it’s not turned in.

4 | Page
• Your final course grade depends on all work being present. Missing assignments will
drastically lower your overall course grade. It’s always better to have a low grade on
an assignemnt than a zero.

Grades

• D is a “just by the skin of your teeth” minimum, passing grade

• C is an average grade. The average effort by a college art student: all assignments
presented, effort expended, developed skills, some improvement, class participation.
Average
• B shows student has worked hard, with real improvement and effort, exceeded the
average
• A is for excellent work, combined with the high effort and visible improvement mentioned
above.

• A student with great skills, who does not make the effort to improve and participate in this
class, will not receive an A. Likewise, the best effort and improvement without
accomplished work cannot receive a top grade either.

N Mark (Grade) Non-Attendant Policy

This mark is awarded to students who, though registered, never attended class, did not
officially drop, and (if an online or hybrid class) have no gradable work. Marks of "N" do
not satisfy prerequisites and are non-transferable. This mark is not used in the calculation
of GPA, but it may affect eligibility for financial aid. Instructors confirm non-attendance by
the "N" Mark Report Date (found in MyOCC for each section) and then submit their "N"
marks to the institution. Students who have received an "N" mark will not be permitted to
enter the class, nor will the student be able to drop the class. After the "N" mark has been
submitted, a change of grade will not be accepted for the student. For more information

IMPORTANT: Redo-policy

**Only assignments turned in on the original due date will be considered eligible for the following redo-
policy. **

If you submit your work by the deadline and get a grade lower than an (A) on any project except the final
one, you'll have one week to fix or redo it. If your improved work deserves a higher grade, I'll upgrade your
score. If the improvement doesn't lead to a higher grade, your score will stay the same. If the latter
happens, you'll get 1 additional week to try and boost your grade.

When resubmitting an assignment, be sure to write “REDO” on the back next to your name.
Late assignments will lower your grade a whole grade every week they are not turned in up to 2
weeks. Any project not submitted within 2 weeks of the given due date will automatically receive an
(F). Late assignments are not eligible to redo.

Students who fail to meet the minimum class requirements will receive a failing grade.

Participation/Critique

During still life, figure, cast, drapery etc drawing sessions, all students must draw directly from life
using the in class set up/model. Otherwise, you will not receive credit on those projects. You are allowed
to use photos to assist you with details etc, but the drawing must be done mostly from life. Students who
refuse to draw from life, will receive zeros on their projects.

Final project presentation: All students must present their final projects during the final group critique.
Each student must hang their work and speak about it to the entire class. Any student who refuses to
present to the entire class, during the final group critique will receive a zero on their final project.

• All students are expected to participate during class discussion.

• Please use vocabulary appropriate for this class.

• Discussion of others work, improves your artistic vocabulary, and allows you to assess
your work and others.

• As artists, we should be able to discuss our craft candidly and intelligently.
