Learning Activity Sheet
Name: ___________________________________________________ Grade & Section: ____________

Learning Competency: 1. Illustrates a relation and a function. (M8AL-IIc-1) 2. Verifies if a given

relation is a function. (M8AL-IIc-2) 3. Determines dependent and independent variables. (M8AL-
IIc-3)
Background Information for Learners
A relation between two sets is a collection of ordered pairs containing one object from each set. If the
object x is from the first set and the object y is from the second set, then the objects are said to be related if
the ordered pair (x,y). A function is a type of relation.
A function is a relation for which each value from the first components of the ordered pairs is
associated with exactly one value from the set of second components of the ordered pair. But, a relation is
allowed to have the object x in the first set to be related to more than one object in the second set.
Example 1. Determine whether the following relations are functions or not given the set of ordered
pairs

a. {(0, 3), (1, 4), (2, 5), (3, 6), (4, 7)} b. {(1, 2), (2, 3), (2, 0), (3, 5)}
Solution:

a. Each element in the domain, {1, 2, 3, 4} is assigned to no more than one value in the range. 0 is
assigned only to 3, 1 is assigned only to 4, 2 is assigned only to 5, 3 is assigned only to 6 and 4 is assigned
only to 7. Therefore, it is a function.

b. Since the domain element 2 is assigned to two different values in the range 3 and 0, then it is not a
function.

Example 2: Consider the mapping diagram below, which one describes a function?

a. Teacher Student b. Student I.D No.

Anne Jude 0001
Jane James 0002
Ms. Bacud John Faith 0003
Peter Mercy 0004

Solution:
a. The mapping diagram is a one-to-many correspondence which means that there is only
one teacher in the domain paired to four students in the range. Therefore, the given
diagram is not a function.
b. The mapping diagram is a one-to-one correspondence because every student has its own unique
I.D. No. Therefore, it is a function.

Example 3: Which of the following equations describe a function?

a. x2 + y = 8 b. x2 + y2 = 9
Solution:
a. Express y in terms of x. If two or more values of y can be obtained for a given x, then the equation is
not function.
x2 + y = 8 Write the original equation
2
y=8–x Subtraction Property of Equality (subtract x2 from both sides)
If x = 1, then y = 8 – (1)2 = 7; x = 2, then y = 8 – (2)2 = 4.
The equation defines y as a function of x because for every value of x there is only one
value for y.
b. x2 + y2 = 9 Write the original equation
y2 = 9 – x 2 Subtraction Property of Equality (subtract x2 from both sides)

y = ± 9− x2 Extract square root on both sides

If x = 0, then y = ± 9−(0)2 = ±√ 9 = ± 3
The equation does not define y as a function of x because for one value of x there exist
two values for y.
Activity 1. Yes or No
Directions: Write YES in the blank before each item if the given set of ordered pairs describes a
function and NO if it is not.
______1. (-3, -6), (1, 0), (3, 6), (6, 12)
______2. (2, 5), (2, 7), (2, 9), (2,1)
______3. (3, -3), (5, -5), (9, -6) (5, -1)
______4. (-3, 2), (-2, 1), (-1, 0), (0, 1)
______5. (-8, 6), (-6, 4), (-4, 2), (-2, 0)

Dependent and Independent Variables

Background Information for Learners
Dependent variable depends on the independent variable while the independent variable
controls the dependent variable.

Activity 2: Classify Me
Directions: Classify the variables as dependent or independent. Write your answer on the space
provided. Number 1 is done for you as an example.
1. the number of hours at work and the salary in a certain private company
Independent Variable: number of hours at work
Dependent Variable: salary
2. the distance covered and the volume of gasoline needed
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
3. number of hours studied and your test score
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
4. area of the square and length of its side
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
5. the amount of money paid and the number of hours spent in the computer shop
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
6. amount of electric bill and the number of kilowatt-hour consumed
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
7. number of seats needed in a meeting and the number of attendees
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
8. the amount of milk produced and the number of carabao in the farm
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
9. weight of chicken and its payment
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
10. gallons of paint and the surface area of the wall to be painted
Independent Variable: _____________________________
Dependent Variable: _____________________________
