- Addition and subtraction of decimals
- How to add decimal numbers? What are the steps?
Steps in adding decimal numbers:
Arrange the numbers in columns. Align the decimal points and the numbers
according to their place value.
Add like whole numbers. Start adding from right to left. Regroup if necessary.
Put the decimal point in the sum directly below the decimal points of the addends.
C. Unlocking of difficulties:
- Match Me!! Choose your answer from the box
Decimal Fraction Decimal Whole number
Mixed Number Multiplication Digit
D. Discussion:
1. Activity
(Word Problem)
Linda bought face mask to protect herself from Covid 19. She bought 25 pieces at
₱25.55 each. How much did she pay?
- What is asked in the problem? (The amount she paid for the face mask)
- What are given? (25 pieces; ₱25.55 each)
- What operation is needed to solve the problem? (Multiplication)
- What is the number sentence? (₱25.55 x 25 = N)
- Perform the operation or the solution
₱25.55
x 25
12275
+ 5110_
638.75
2. Analysis:
- How to multiply a decimal number by a whole number?
- Steps:
Multiply as you would with whole numbers.
Count the number of decimal places in your factors.
Move the decimal point in the product one place to the left for each decimal place you
counted.
Example: What is the product of 8.3 and 4?
First, multiply as you would with whole numbers. Just simply multiply.
8. 3
x 4
332
Now, place the decimal point in your product. Count the number of decimal places in
your factors.
8.3 has 1 decimal place, so, move the decimal point 1 place to the left in your
product.
8. 3 1 decimal place.
x 4
332
So, 8.3 x 4 = 33. 2
- Another example: 6.4 x 9 = 57.6
- That was multiplying decimal with 1 digit, let us now proceed to multiplying
decimal with 2 digit. Let us try 0. 14 x 23 =
First, Multiply as you would with whole numbers.
0.14
x 23
042
+ 028__
322
Now, place the decimal point in your product. Count the number of decimal places in
your factors.
0.14 has 2 decimal places. So, move the decimal point 2 places to the left in your
product.
0.14 2 decimal places
x 23
042
+ 028__
322
So, 0.14 x 23 = 3.22
3. Abstraction:
(Display on the tv screen about multiplication problems involving decimals and whole
numbers. Call on learners to come up to the board and solve the problem).
Clint buys 7 packs of organic milk at the neighborhood store. Each pack is priced at
₱ 12. 75. How much does Clint spend in all on his purchase?
Marjorie joins “Club One” on a monthly membership of ₱ 26.40. How much will
Marjorie spend in all if she continuous to be a member for 12 months?
4. Application:
- Group Activity “Decimal Multiplication Relay Race”
- Create a relay race activity where learners compete in teams. Each team member takes
turn solving a multiplication problem involving decimals and a whole number. The team that
correctly solves the most problems in one minute wins. This activity encourages
collaboration and quick thinking.
D. Generalization
- How to multiply a decimal by a whole number?
- What are the steps?
Remember: Multiplying decimals by a whole number is similar to multiplying whole
numbers, with attention to decimal placement.
