Culminating Review January 2024

This document outlines the schedule and content for a 3-day culminating review in SNC2D. Day 1 focuses on chemistry and will assess topics like chemical reactions, properties, and lab skills. Day 2 covers physics and will involve designing experiments, safety procedures, and concepts like refraction. Day 3 addresses biology and climate change, assessing cells, article analysis, greenhouse gases, graphing, and making connections between climate and organ systems. Students are advised to study and create study materials to prepare for this open book assessment of the course content.

SNC2D Culminating Review January 2024

Please ensure you have the following for all dates:

Your OWN pencil, eraser, calculator, ruler, protractor

The culminating is divided into three days to reflect the skills unit. It will require you to apply your
knowledge of the course. It is a series of open book and notebook tasks.

Studying will help fortify your knowledge of the course. Creating a study sheet and organizing your
notes/textbook is highly recommended.

Day 1: Chemistry Perform: January 11th, 2024

Topics assessed include:
- procedure flow charts – draw one out given steps
- collecting proper observations data (use PROPER terms!)
- physical and chemical properties
- physical and chemical changes
- acids, bases, neutralization reactions
- acid-base, pH indicators (see notes on what colour changes have in acid vs base)
- types of reactions (single/double displacement, synthesis, etc.)
- writing chemical formulas, equations, and balancing them
- law of conservation of mass
- lab performance indicators: safety, clean up, productivity, follows instructions, independence
(you get marks for this!)

Day 2: Physics Plan: January 12th, 2024

Topics assessed include:
- Materials and Equipment list (materials we’ve used in Optics, nothing new)
- Labelled diagram of the experimental set up (show me you’re set up, what it looks like, label all
rays, angles, normal, equipment, etc.)
- Safety concerns
- Step-by-step procedures – how go about conducting this lab? Given a procedure and asked to
put them in the correct order
- Observation table (proper title, enclose boarders, proper headings, units of measurement)
- Experimental rationale (why did you choose to design the experiment the way that you did)
- Main concepts: refraction, reflection, total internal reflection

Day 3: Biology & Climate Analyze: January 15th, 2024

Topics assessed include:
- Cells and the cell cycle (structure, function, plant vs animal, errors, cancer)
- article analysis + answer questions relating to article
- greenhouse gases, strategies to reduce greenhouse gases
- impact of climate change on human health
- graphing (title, label axes, scale consistent, plot points correctly, legend if graphing more than
one data set)
- graph analysis – can you interpret what the data is telling you?
- organ systems, links between climate and organ systems, can you make connections to what
you know about the systems to the article provided?
- plants
