Output Devices

Output devices are used to send information from the computer.

There are two categories of output:

Soft copy Output

Exists electronically and is displayed for a temporary period of time. Output presented by the
monitor or speaker is called softcopy.

Hardcopy Output

Exists physically and is a more permanent form of output than softcopy. Output presented by
the printer or plotter is called hardcopy.

There are four types of output:

Text – consists of characters words, sentences, and paragraphs.

Graphics – consists of drawings, charts, and photographs.

Audio – this is music, speech or any other sound.

Video – this consists of full motion images that are played back at various speeds.

Examples of Output Devices are:-

Printer

A printer shows text on paper and provides a HARDCOPY of information. There are two
groups of printers. These are:

Impact Printers – with this type of printer a hammer strikes an inked ribbon onto the paper to
form a character, like a typewriter

Examples of Impact Printers are Dot matrix and Daisy Wheel

Advantages of Impact Printers

- less expensive

- can make multiple copies of a document

Disadvantages of Impact Printers

- Noisy

- Poor print quality

- Poor graphics if any at all

Non – Impact Printers: - This type of printer does not involve the actual striking of the paper;
instead, it uses ink spray or toner powder, heat and special paper

Examples of Non-Impact are Ink Jet printers and Laser Jet printers

Advantages of Non - Impact Printer

- Quiet

- Can print graphics

Disadvantages of Non-impact printers

- More expensive

- Cannot produce multiple carbon copies

Monitor

Displays information on the screen in the form of SOFTCOPY

Speakers – used to hear sound coming from the computer

Plotters

These are sophisticated printers that are used to produce high quality drawings such as blue
