September 5-6
I. OBJECTIVES:
1. describe simple and complex machines
2. learn the steps of the design process and identify its benefits
Instructions:
Read each scenario carefully and then:
1. Identify the simple machine(s) present in the scenario.
2. Explain how the simple machine(s) make the task easier or more efficient.
3. Use appropriate terminology when identifying and explaining the simple
machines (e.g., lever, pulley, inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw, wedge).
Worksheet Scenarios:
Scenario 1:
You are opening a bottle of soda using a bottle opener.
Scenario 2:
A knife is used to cut a loaf of bread.
Scenario 3:
A flag is raised to the top of a flagpole during a school assembly.
Scenario 4:
A student uses scissors to cut a piece of paper.
Scenario 5:
A screw is used to secure two pieces of wood together.
F. Generalization
How do simple machines, such as levers and pulleys, enable us to accomplish
mechanical tasks more efficiently, and what are some real-life examples of
their applications in various industries and everyday life?
F. Evaluation
Identification
G. Assignment
Select a common household task or chore (e.g., lifting a heavy bucket of water,
opening a stubborn jar lid, or moving furniture) and identify which type(s)
of simple machines might be used to make this task easier. Describe how these
simple machines could be applied.
