Animal Tissue

1. Identify three different cell types of epithelial tissues. [3M]


• Simple Squamous epithelium
• Simple Cuboidal epithelium
• Simple Columnar epithelium

2. Describe three types of muscle tissues. [3M]


• Skeletal muscle tissue: long and cylindrical cells shaped. Function for voluntary
movements. Skeletal muscles attached to bones.
• Cardiac muscle tissue: branching, striated and generally uninucleate cells which
interdigitate to specialized junctions. Located at the walls of heart as it contracts and
relax to propels blood into circulation.
• Smooth muscle tissue: spindle-shaped cells with nucleus at the centre, arranged
closely to form sheets. Located at mostly in the walls of hollow organs to propels
substances such as foodstuffs, urine or a baby along internal passageway.

3. Identify and describe the functions of three different cell types of epithelial tissues. [3M]
• Squamous: allow passage of materials by diffusion of filtration in sites.
• Cuboidal: involve in secretion and absorption process.
• Columnar: involve in secretion or absorption of mucus, enzymes or other
substances.
4. Compare the main types of connective tissue and describe their functions. [4M]

Plant Tissue

1. Name three types of ground tissue. [3M]


• Parenchyma
• Collenchyma
• Sclerenchyma

2. Describe the function of different vascular tissue in plants. [3M]


• Vascular tissue consists of xylem and phloem which are main transport system in
plants. Xylem responsible for transportation of water and dissolves ions from the
roots upwards through the plant. Phloem tissue is to transport carbohydrates from
sources to sinks through the sieve elements.

3. Compare between apical meristem and lateral meristem. [3M]


• Apical meristem: located at tip of shoots and roots. Enable primary growth which is
growth in length. Have three types of primary apical meristems
• Lateral meristem: Increases girth in non-woody plant on secondary growth. Present
is most trees, shrubs and some herbs. Have two types of lateral meristems which are
cork cambium and vascular cambium.

4. Differentiate between primary and secondary growth in plants. [3M]
