This document provides details for a lesson plan on solving radical equations for Grade 9 students. The objectives are for students to define radical equations, solve equations involving radicals, and solve problems involving radicals. The lesson will involve motivation, presentation of objectives and topics, examples and activities to unlock difficulties, and a lesson proper involving group work and presentation. Students will work in groups to analyze sample equations and identify the concepts and processes used to simplify them.

DETAILED LESSON IN GRADE 9

____________________________________________________________________________

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the students are expected to:
a. Define Radical Equation,
b. Solve equations involving radical expressions, and
c. Solve problems involving radicals.

A. SUBJECT MATTER
A. TOPIC: SOLVING RADICAL EQUATIONS
B. REFERENCES: Mathematics Learner’s Module for Grade 9, pages 280-295, https://slideshare.net
C. MATERIALS: Manila Papers, Marker, Chalkboard, Chalk, and Activity Sheets, PPT
D. SKILLS/PERFORMANCE STANDARD: critical thinking and problem solving, determine the number of possible
ways of doing certain tasks, or selecting some objects from a set. Collaborate with teacher and peers.
E. VALUES INTEGRATION: Self-awareness, Decision Making, patience, giving the importance of the
Topic.

F. CONCEPTS: Radical Equation is an equation in which the variable appears in a radicand.

In solving radical equations, we can use the fact that if two numbers are equal, then

To solve a Radical Equation, there is a Ma’am, there is a process on how to

10mins. But you must Remember that if the
squares of two numbers are equal, the
numbers may or may not be equal. Such

as, (-3) = 3 , but -3 . It is therefore
important to check any possible
solutions for radical equations. Because
in squaring both sides of a radical
equation, it is possible to get extraneous
solutions.

For example:

( )
( ) [( ) ]

To check:

This is the only solution.

This is called extraneous Root.

From the example that I gave, How

would you define an extraneous root? is an unequal value or if you go to

So, Let’s have another Example;

going to school and the 9 meters

is she from the starting point which is
her house?

problem.

Generalization Who can share? Ma’am, I learned how to solve radical

equations and how simplifying radical
expression help it.

Thank You! That is Right.

Now that you already know how to

solve radical equations and somehow
relate that skills to solving real-life
problem, Let us try to apply this
understanding by answering the
following.
III. EVALUATION
A. Solve the following radical equations:
1. √
2. √
3. √ √
4. √
B. Solve the given problem then answer the questions that follow.

A wire is anchor on a 9-meter pole. One part is attached to the top of the pole and the other is 2 meters away from
the base?

1. How long is the wire?

2. What will happen if the wire is farther/nearer to the base?
3. What mathematical concepts did you use?

IV. ASSIGNMENTS
A. Solve the radical equations. Write your solution and the property, definition or theorem that you use in
your solution.
1. √ √
2. √
B. Try to answer the following questions:
1. What quadrilaterals has diagonal that do not bisect each other?
2. What is quadrilateral?
