Network structures can be either client-server models or peer-to-peer networks. In a client-server model, clients make requests to centralized servers which manage shared resources. Peer-to-peer networks have no dedicated servers, with all computers having equal capabilities and responsibilities for sharing resources. Key differences are that client-server models offer better security and management but rely on servers, while peer-to-peer networks are simpler to set up but lack centralized administration and security.

Network Structures

Network structure
Network structure is a term used to describe the
method of how data on a network is organized and
viewed.

Client-Server model
Peer-to-Peer Network

computing model in which the server hosts, delivers and

manages most of the resources and services to be consumed by
the client.

one or more client computers connected to a central server

over a network or internet connection.

Shares computing resources.

It is also known as a networking computing model or

client/server network because all the requests and services are
delivered over a network.
Client-Server model (Server-based)
Features of Client-Server Network

All resources are controlled through the server.

This is a distributed application structure that divides tasks

between the providers of a resource or service ( called server),
and service requesters (called clients).
The client is the requesting machine and the server is the
supplying machine.

Different types of servers are file-server, print server, e-mail server,

fax server, database server, etc.
Features of Client-Server Network
The most common type of client server arrangement is a LAN
consisting of PCs connected to a network server.

The Internet server serves all the clients on the LAN.

A client program running on a computer can request a specific
data from the server. The server program will fetch the data and
return it to the client.
In this way, a LAN permits all the clients to share the hardware and
software resources.
The most commonly shared resources are disk storage devices and
printers.
Advantage and Disadvantages
1.Centralized resources and
1. Expensive
data security

2. Flexibility 2.Maintenance

3. Interoperability 3.Server not utilized fully

4. Scalability 4. Dependence on server

Peer-to-Peer Network
Peer-to-peer architecture (P2P architecture) is a commonly used
computer networking architecture in which each workstation, or
node, has the same capabilities and responsibilities.
It is often compared and contrasted to the classic client/server
architecture, in which some computers are dedicated to serving
others.

P2P may also be used to refer to a single software program designed

so that each instance of the program may act as both client and
server, with the same responsibilities and status.

In P2P Network, there is no dedicated servers.
No Single computer is assigned the role of providing services to all other computers.
The PEER means equal, and therefore, in this type of network, all computers are equal.

Advantages
1. Simplicity of design – no major costs of server
and network operating systems involved.
2. Since no server, all nodes are fully utilized.
3. Not dependent on other computers.
4. Linking computers is easier than in the client-
server model.
5. Computers can be connected to share broadband
internet, printers and other expensive resources.
6. A full time network administrator is not required
to maintain this type of network
Disadvantages
1. Since there is no server administration of network is difficult.
2. There is no security of data and other resources.
3. More time consuming to maintain the software on individual computers.
4. Designed for small number of users. If the number of users increases beyond 10, network
begins to deteriorate.
