Operation Research

This document contains a series of operations research and project management questions from Egerton University. Question one involves determining the optimal number of days each of two mines should operate to fulfill a weekly smelting plant contract. Question two is about determining the optimal product mix for three types of vacuum cleaners. Question three involves minimizing transportation costs to fulfill customer orders from three factories. Question four provides activity durations and costs to draw an arrow diagram and schedule activities to level out project costs.

MMEN 550: OPERATIONS RESEARCH TAKE HOME C.A.T.
STREAM: AGEN, CEEN, MMEN, ECEN

QUESTION ONE
a) A company owns two different mines that produce ores which, after being crushed; they
can be graded into three different classes namely; high, medium and low-grade. The
company has contracted a firm to provide a smelting plant with capacities of 30 tons of
high-grade, 60 tons of medium-grade and 16 tons of low-grade ore per week. The two
mines have two different operating characteristics as detailed below;

Mine Production capacities (Tons/day)

Mine Yields High Medium Low

X 200 5 3 0

Y 160 1 5 1

Considering that the mines work throughout the week, how many days/week should each
mine be operated to fulfill the smelting plant contract of maximum productions (15 Marks)
b) Radars are designed to track aircraft automatically by performing calculation are to
determine the relative likelihoods of each plot arising new positions (see table below).

Aircraft Position
Plot 1 2 3 4
A 0.39 0.34 0.37 0.32
B 0.33 0.40 0.20 0.35
C 0.24 0.31 0.16 0.27
D 0.25 0.20 0.24 0.22

Allocate the Aircraft Position to the plots so as to maximize track. (10 marks)
QUESTION TWO

A small independent Engineering Firm has purchased 300 positronic circuits for Ksh 15000 and
wishes to use the circuits to manufacture vacuum cleaners. A survey done by the company has
shown these circuits to be suitable for the following applications;

• Small-car vacuum cleaner which requires one circuit. Other components and labour costs
Ksh 150 for each cleaner. It takes an hour to assemble the cleaner.
• Dulexe-house vacuum cleaners using one circuit each with other components and labour
to cost Ksh 800 per cleaner. It takes two hours to assemble
• Customer-designed vacuum cleaners using one circuit each. labour and other components
to cost Ksh 600 per cleaner and requires three hours to assemble.

A market survey has shown that at most 300 small car cleaners would be sold at price of Ksh 500
each. A maximum of 10 dulexe cleaners for a piece of Ksh 1250 each and standard cleaners has
a share of up to 20 units for a price of Ksh 1150 each. There are380 hours for the assembly.

a) Advice on the best mix of cleaners to give maximum returns (20 Marks)

b) Which resource(s) would you recommend for increase? Why (5 marks)

QUESTION THREE

A company has three factories F1, F2, F3 capable of 50, 25 and 25 thousand components per
week. The company has contracted to supply four customers C1, C2, C3 and C4 requiring 15,
20, 20 and 30 thousand components. The cost of transporting distances, sales and production
costs for 1000 components as shown in table below. {Unit cost of transport is ksh 10/ km’000)

Distances (km)

Factory C1 C2 C3 C4 Production (Ksh/’000 units)

F1 13 17 8 6 150

F2 10 11 17 16 180

F3 12 14 8 15 210

Sales costs

(Ksh/’000 units) 20 40 10 60

(a) The distribution pattern to minimize costs. (20marks)

(b) Determine the production at each factory and (5 Marks)

QUESTION FOUR

Timber PreFabs Company produces prefabricated houses in the factory and transports them to
sites where they are attached to the foundations. Table Q3 shows the activities involved, time
and cost estimates;

Activity Immediate Duration Cost

Predecessor(s) Days Ksh

A - 4 520

B - 5 490

C - 10 680

D A 7 430

E A 10 710

F B 3 470

G C 7 440

H D, F 8 580

J D, F 4 630

K E, H 6 440

L J 5 550

a) Draw the Arrow diagram and determine project duration. (7 marks)

b) Schedule the activities so as to level out the costs of the project (18 marks)
