Table 1

The document describes a calibration model for analyzing dry pet food parameters using an NIRS DS2500 instrument. The model provides fast, accurate results for protein, moisture, fat, fiber, and ash content. Validation tests on independent samples from the US and Denmark showed strong correlations between NIRS DS2500 results and wet chemistry reference values. The calibration allows frequent quality checks of dry pet food production against specifications without lengthy laboratory analysis.

NIRS™ DS2500 provides fast, accurate results

for Dry Pet Food parameters. It allows you to

perform frequent checks against production
specifications and control the quality of the
product.
By using NIRS DS2500 for Pet Food analysis
you will get results almost instantly instead of
waiting hours for results from standard wet
chemistry analysis in the laboratory.
This Application Note describes the calibration
models and the results that can be expected
when analysing ground samples of Dry Pet
Food using the NIRS DS2500.

The application is based on samples mainly from North America and China, but also includes
samples from Europe. Samples are dog and cat food with less than 15 % moisture, higher moisture
content samples are considered to be wet pet food samples.
The application covers five parameters, Protein, Moisture, Fat, Fibre and Ash.

Table 1
All calibration models were developed using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN).
The performance was evaluated using independent NIRS DS2500 test sets, from which the results
are presented in the table below. The test sets have not been included in the calibration set and
represent data from a different instrument and a different reference laboratory.
The independent validation set consists of samples from USA and Denmark.

Table 2
N: Number of samples in the independent test set.
Acc.: Independent test set accuracy expressed as Standard Error of Prediction (SEP) corrected for bias.
Min.: Minimum reference value in test set.
Max.: Maximum reference value in test set.
RSQ: Linear correlation between NIRS DS2500 result and reference result.

The graphs below show predicted results from the independent test set versus the reference (actual)
values for the parameters.

The performance example outlined in this note should only be regarded as a guideline for the
expected performance of new installations. The performance of new installations will always
depend on the uniformity of the sample preparation and the homogeneity of the product, as well as
the accuracy of the reference method used.
An indication of the obtainable performance can be found as approximately 1.5 to 2 times the
repeatability of the reference method.
If the samples you are measuring exceed the stated calibration ranges, or have non-common
variations of other components or feed ingredients, this might influence the performance of the
calibrations.

A coarse grinding with for example a FOSS Cemotec is in most cases sufficient. For a perfect
homogenisation of the sample, you should use a cyclone mill with a 1 mm sieve - such as a Retch
mill or a FOSS Cyclotec.
A representative sample or about 30 grams is used to fill up a standard NIRS DS2500 small cup.
Compressing the sample is not necessary.

The calibrations have been stabilised to be able to analyse samples at sample temperatures between
10-30 ºC. For optimum performance, the sample temperature should be as close as possible to the
ambient temperature. Analysing at a temperature higher or lower than the environment temperature
increases the risk of moisture condensation or moisture evaporation from the sample and
temperature drift during the analysis.
