Math 10 - Q3 M4

The document discusses distinguishable permutations and provides examples of calculating the number of permutations when objects are identical. It explains that the number of distinguishable permutations is calculated by taking the total permutations and dividing by the factorial of the number of identical objects. Formulas and examples are given to demonstrate how to find the number of distinguishable permutations in different scenarios.

Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 10 Self-Learning Module on

Distinguishable Permutation!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st-century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module on Distinguishable

Permutation!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

entire module.
EXPECTATION

1. Find the number of Permutation of Distinguishable objects.

PRETEST

Directions: Identity what is being asked in each question. Write only the letter of
the correct answer.
1. Find the number of permutations of the letters of the word MOMMY.
A. 8 C. 20
B. 12 D. 24

2. A stockbroker wants to assign 12 new clients equally to 4 of its sales agents. In

how many different ways can this be done?
A. 369,600 C. 389,800
B. 379,700 D. 399,900

3. Bobby applied for a landline phone in his new house. He was given the number
7-630-8380. How many distinguishable permutations are there in his
telephone number?
A. 5,000 C. 5,060
B. 5,040 D. 5,080

4. How many ways can you arrange books of the same kind if there are 4 Math
books, 3 Science books, and 2 English books on a shelf?
A. 1,260 C. 1,270
B. 1,264 D. 1,274

5. Find the number of permutation if five 1,000-peso bills, three 100-peso bills, and
two 50-peso bills are arranged in a wallet.
A. 2,500 C. 2,515
B. 2,510 D. 2,520

RECAP
Directions: Solve the following problems.

1. Five frontliners were on a break. They were hungry and wanted to buy
something to eat. How many ways can they arrange themselves in a row to
buy for their food?
2. In how many ways can a president, a treasurer, and a secretary be chosen
from among 7 candidates?
LESSON

How many possible three-letter arrangements are there in the word MOM?
Using the permutation 3P3 = 3! = 6 then, by tree diagram these are the results;

O M ---- MOM
M
---- MMO
M O
M M ---- OMM
O
M M ---- OMM

O M ---- MOM
M
M O ---- MMO

As shown in the diagram above there are 6 arrangements. What did you
observe about the three-letter arrangements? There are 2-MOM, 2-OMM, and 2-
MMO. We know that the permutations of 3 letters of the word MOM are 3!, we must
take into consideration that we cannot distinguish between the two M’s in any of the
permutation but the two M’s can be permuted in 2! ways and do not produce a
different result. Hence, the number of distinguishable permutations P is given by

3!
P= =3
2!

Permutations with repetition (Distinguishable Permutation)

The number of permutations of n things where a things are alike, b things
are alike, and c things are alike, and so forth, is:

𝑛!
P= 𝑎!𝑏!𝑐!…
Examples:

1. Find the number of distinguishable permutations of the letters in the word

BASKETBALL.
Solution:

There is a total of 10! permutations in the word BASKETBALL but there are
2 B’s, 2 A’s, and 2 L’s and can be permuted 2!, 2!, 2! ways respectively, in each
permutation without altering the result. Hence, the number of distinguishable
permutations is given by:

10!
P= = 453,600 ways
2!2!2!
2. I have 6 face masks and 4 face shields to give to 10 frontliners. In how many
ways can I distribute the 10 gifts to the 10 frontliners?

Solution:

Since there are 10 gifts and 10 frontliners, using the formula, I can
distribute the gifts in

10! 10𝑥9𝑥8𝑥7𝑥6!
= = 210 ways
6!4! 6!𝑥4𝑥3𝑥2𝑥1
3. A frontliner at the Pasig City General Hospital has 4 blue PPEs, 3 white
PPEs, and 2 green PPEs. In how many ways can he arrange all his PPE’s in
his locker?

Solution:
9!
= 1,260 ways
4!3!2!

How many different arrangements can be made with the 7 beads if they
may be arranged in any linear arrangement?
3. In how many ways can 4 Math books, 3 Science books, 2 Filipino books,
and 1 English book be arranged on a shelf?
