Course Title: EXERCISE-BASED FITNESS ACTIVITIES

Course Details:

A. Summary
This 2-unit course enables Service Physical Education students to acquire practical know-how and
scientific knowledge about the impact of Fitness Exercise on the development and maintenance of the
individual's physical, mental and social life while engaging in MVPA and HRFA. The primary goal of this
program is to prepare students to be evidence-based practitioners of exercise and human movement
disciplines who think critically about the science behind their practice. This will provide experiences in
flexibility, core stability, strength, and mobility training. It includes goal setting exercise progression and
regression and periodic assessments for the development of various fitness components. This course is
designed to introduce qualitative concepts in biomechanics and the functional contribution of muscles
to exercises. The course will also cover the physiological responses and adaptations of the
cardiorespiratory, muscular, neural, and energy systems to aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

This course, therefore, builds on the foundation of motor skills activated through core training. It will
provide experiences in a variety of exercise programs for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing
cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness (i.e. core stability, muscle strength, endurance power). It
includes speed and agility training with a focus on body coordination and balance. In conjunction with
fitness and wellness concepts, exercise and healthy eating principles, learners will be able to enhance
their fitness through goal setting and application of the exercise principles (FITT, progression and
volume); adapt their movement competencies to independent physical activities (PA) pursuits and
periodically evaluate their PA and eating patterns to monitor their progress and achievement of
personal fitness and dietary goals.
