Introduction To Data Communication and Networking

This document discusses data communication and networking. It defines key terms like telecommunication, data communication, and data flow. There are three main modes of data flow: simplex, half-duplex, and full-duplex. The document also discusses networks, including what they are, different types of connections (point-to-point and multipoint), and network topologies like mesh, star, bus, and ring. Finally, it covers network categories such as LANs, WANs, and MANs and provides examples of each.

Data Communication

and Networking
CST 232-2
Lecture 01
2 Data Communication

The term telecommunication means

communication at a distance. The word data
refers to information presented in whatever form
is agreed upon by the parties creating and
using the data. Data communications are the
exchange of data between two devices via
some form of transmission medium such as a
wire cable.
3 Components of Data Communication
Systems
4 Data Flow

 Simplex
 In simplex mode, the communication is unidirectional, as on a
one-way street. Only one of the two devices on a link can
transmit; the other can only receive
 Half-Duplex
 In half-duplex mode, each station can both transmit and
receive, but not at the same time. When one device is sending,
the other can only receive, and vice versa
 Full-Duplex
 In full-duplex mode (also called duplex), both stations can
transmit and receive simultaneously

6 Networks

A network is a set of devices (often referred to

as nodes) connected by communication links.
A node can be a computer, printer, or any
other device capable of sending and/or
receiving data generated by other nodes on
the network.
A link can be a cable, air, optical fiber, or any
medium which can transport a signal carrying
information.
7 Network Criteria

 Performance
 Depends on Network Elements
 Measured in terms of Delay and Throughput
 Reliability
 Failure rate of network components
 Measured in terms of availability/robustness
 Security
 Data protection against corruption/loss of data due to:
 Errors
 Malicious users
8 Physical Structures

Type of Connection
Point to Point - single transmitter and receiver
Multipoint - multiple recipients of single transmission
Physical Topology
Connection of devices
Type of transmission - unicast, mulitcast, broadcast
9 Types of connections

 Point – to – Point Connection

10 Types of connections Cont…

 Multipoint Connection
11 Types of Topologies

Mesh Topology
Star Topology
Bus Topology
Ring Topology
12 Mesh Topology Example
13 Star Topology Example
14 Bus Topology Example
15 Ring Topology Example
16 Hybrid Topology

 A Star backbone with three Bus networks

17 Network Categories

Local Area Networks (LANs)

Short distances
Designed to provide local interconnectivity
Wide Area Networks (WANs)
Long distances
Provide connectivity over large areas
Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs)
Provide connectivity over areas such as a city, a campus
18 LAN Example

 An isolated LAN connecting 12 computers to a hub in a

closet
19 Switched WAN Example
20 Point – to – Point WAN Example
21 Complex Networked Model Example

 A heterogeneous

Four WANs and
Two LANs
