Osmosis Lab

Objective: to understand and demonstrate osmosis using carrots as cell models.

Question: What will happen to the size and texture of carrots in a salt water solution and distilled water?
Materials:
 2 400 mL beakers
 String
 Measuring tape or ruler
 Salt
 Distilled water
 Balance
 Carrots

Procedure:
1. Fill 2 beakers with equal amounts of distilled water, approximately 3/4s full (carrot needs to be fully
submerged).
2. Add 15 g NaCl to one beaker and label it Salt Water. Label the other beaker, Fresh Water.
3. Cut a carrot in half, tie a string 2 cm below the cut end of each piece (make sure the string is tied
tightly).
4. Use a balance to record the mass of each carrot (record mass in data table).
5. Record your observations of the carrots (size, texture).
6. Place the carrot (cut end down) in the Salt Water beaker. Place the other carrot, also cut end down, in
the Fresh Water beaker.
7. Label both beakers with your group names and class period.
8. Allow carrots to soak for 24 hours.
9. Form your hypothesis: What will happen to the size and texture of both carrots?

10. After 24 hours observe both your carrots and record in data table.
11. Record the mass of both carrots and record in data table.
12. Answer lab questions.
Data:
Mass Before Observations Before Mass after Soaking Observations
Soaking Soaking after Soaking
Fresh Water Carrot

Salt Water Carrot

Discussion Questions:
1. What happened to the string on both carrots (tighter, looser, no change?)?
2. What was the texture like on both carrots?
3. In which type of water did the carrot cells increase in size?
4. In which type of water did the carrot cells decrease in size?
5. Describe what happened in both carrots—be sure to use at least 5 of the terms (osmosis, water, salt,
diffusion, hypotonic, hypertonic, isotonic, and concentration gradient) in your description.
6. If you were to repeat this experiment, what other solutions might you test and what would you expect to
see?

Conclusion:
Answer your original question and confirm or reject your hypothesis.
