Introduction to Avionics
INTRODUCTION
The Avionics systems on the Gulfstream G350 / G450 are based on the
Honeywell Primus Epic architecture. The basic Communication, Navigation,
and Autoflight subsystems will be introduced here and are available in more
detail as part of the 5th week avionics course.
More details are available in the OEM manuals under ATA chapters 23, 34,
and 22.

ADS-B uses GPS signals along with aircraft avionics to transmit the
aircraft’s location to ground receivers. The ground receivers then
transmit that information to controller screens ADS-B also provides
greater coverage, since ADS-B ground stations are so much easier to
place than radar. Remote areas without radar coverage, like the Gulf
of Mexico and parts of Alaska, are now covered by ADS-B.

The static wicks are located on the trailing edges of the wings, hori-
zontal stabilizer and tail cone (Figure AVN-28). Static wicks absorb
and dissipate the static electric charges that would build up on the
aircraft external surfaces. The charge is slowly bled off and discharged
into the atmosphere. This protective measure eliminates static elec-
trical interference with the communications system.

The HGS also has the ability to display data from the EVS, a thermal
image of the real world scene in video format to enhance the pilot’s
situational awareness at night and in certain low visibility environ-
mental conditions. This image is generated by an infrared sensor
installed in the nose of the aircraft. The infrared image is scaled,
aligned, and adjusted to overlay the real world scene as viewed through
the combiner (Figure AVN-43).

The Flight Management System (FMS) has two primary functions and
multiple secondary functions.
These functions work with the associated guidance in both the lateral
and vertical axes. The Navigation Database (NDB) contained in the
FMS is essential to these functions. The database is used to store
waypoints, nav-aids, airways, procedures, airports, and other naviga-
tion data.

STICK SHAKER
Stall Warning Protection System This warning is given through a stick shaker motor to each control
(ATA 22) column and low speed awareness indication on the airspeed tape
(Figure AVN-59).
The SWPS installed on the PlaneView™ aircraft provides a two stage
stall warning/protection (Figure AVN-58). The first stage provides
warning to the pilot that the aircraft is approaching a stall condition.
