    ➔ The document describes the working principle of a PN junction diode and Zenner diode. When a PN junction is formed, a depletion region is created due to diffusion of majority carriers which prevents current flow. However, under a forward bias voltage, electrons and holes combine and current flows. Under reverse bias, the depletion region widens but at a certain voltage called the breakdown or Zener voltage, avalanche breakdown occurs allowing current to flow. This phenomenon is exploited in Zener diodes to provide voltage regulation.
