Notes on the Advanced Level Foundation Year Student Transcript

Assessment and Award

Assessment is formative and continues throughout the course. The final award is based on marks gained for coursework
assignments and examinations in each subject. The students undertake a total of three assessments in each subject. A weighting
system ensures that later work receives proportionally more credit and that a student is not unduly penalised if he or she makes
a slow start to the course.

Marking is primarily benchmarked against GCE A-level to give the following broad equivalents in academic standard:
40% (minimum for Pass) 72 points at A-level (or DDD)
50% 96 points at A-level (or CCC)
60% (minimum for Merit Pass) 120 points at A-level (or BBB)
75% (minimum for Distinction) 144 points at A-level (or AAA)
(A level: A*=56, A=48, B=40, C=32, D=24, E=16)
A Distinction will be awarded to students who achieve 75% overall with no final subject mark lower than 60%.

In their offers admissions tutors may choose to specify:

• an overall grade (Pass/Merit/Distinction) or percentage mark for the whole course
• grades or percentages in individual subjects for the whole course
• grades or percentages for the final term (to reflect ability at the end of the course)

Calculating the Award

For all subjects, Assessment 1 is an exam except for Communication and Study Skills, which is an assignment.
For all subjects, Assessments 2 & 3 consist of one exam and one assignment except for the mathematics assessments which consist
of two exams.

Overall marks are weighted in favour of work done later in the course.
A candidate’s final result is a combination of marks gained in the three assessments as follows:
Assessment 1, completed in Term 1 (30%) + Assessments 2 (35%) and 3 (35%), completed in Terms 2 and 3 = Course Total (100%).

The Advanced Level Foundation has the following grade awards:

A Diploma is normally awarded if the following criteria are satisfied:

Diploma Distinction: overall No marks below 60%
75%+
Diploma Merit: No marks below 40%
overall 60%+
Diploma Pass: No more than two final subject mark are between 30%-39% and no final subject mark below
overall 40%+ 30%
Course Pass: may have one subject grade below 30% and two between 30%-39%

If the overall grade is below 40% or more than two subject grades are between 30% and 39% or more than one subject below
30%, the student receives a Course Completed certificate.
The Kings Advanced Level Foundation is assured by Edexcel Pearson and is at Level 3 of the National Qualifications
Framework (Level 6 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework).
