Tutorial 1

This document provides a tutorial on linear algebra concepts including solving systems of linear equations using Gaussian elimination. It contains 13 problems involving determining consistency of systems, proving properties of matrices, solving systems by Gaussian elimination, finding inverses of matrices, and discussing existence and uniqueness of solutions based on the row echelon form of augmented matrices. The tutorial is for the course MA512 Linear Algebra taught by Dr. Muslim Malik from August to December 2022.

MA512- Linear Algebra

Aug-Dec, 2022 (odd Semester)

Tutorial 1
Course Instructor: Dr. Muslim Malik

1. Show that the following system is consistent and find the solution :

2x + y + z = 5
x+y+z =4
x − y + 2z = 1.

2. Show that the following systems are inconsistent:

(a)

3x − 2y = 6
6x − 4y = 10.

(b)

x+y+z =2
y3z = 1
2x + y + 5z = 0.

3. If x and y are any two distinct solutions of the non-homogeneous system Ax = b, then prove that system
Ax = b has infinite number of solutions.

4. Let A and B be invertible metrices. Prove that Adj(AB) = Adj(B)Adj(A).

6. Solve the following systems of linear equations by Gaussian elimination method:
(a)

2x − 2y + 3z = 2
x + 2y − z = 3
3x − y + 2z = 1

(b)

2x + 4y + 6z = 22
3x + 8y + 5z = 27
−x + y + 2z = 2.

7. If ax2 + bx + c is divided by x + 3, x - 5 , and x -1, the remainders are 21, 61 and 9 respectively. Find a,
b and c. (Use Gaussian elimination method).

8. A boy is walking along the path y = ax2 + bx + c through the points (-6, 8), (-2, -12) and (3,8) . He
wants to meet his friend at P(7, 60). Will he meet his friend? (Use Gaussian elimination method).

9. Use Gauss-Jordan elimination to solve the system:

x + 3y + 2z = 2
2x + 7y + 7z = 1
2x + 5y + 2z = 7.

12. How many solutions does the following system has?

4x − 3y − 2z = 0
5x + 9y + 23z = 0
3x + 2y + 7z = 0.

Find them all.
