Lesson Finding the Percentage,
Rate and Base in a Given
Problem
Percentage, rate and base have been a part of our everyday lives. They are
used widely and in many different areas; from shops advertising discounts on
products, bank interests, describing company’s success or failure, giving commission
to a salesperson and in giving grades to learners. This module will provide you
activities that will broaden your understanding of percent and how you can apply it
in your everyday lives.

What’s In

Percent comes from a Latin term “per centum” which means per hundred. It
is the ratio that compares a number to 100. It can be expressed as decimal and
fraction. Complete the table below by expressing percent as decimal and fraction.
See the given example.

Percent Decimal Fraction

73% 5) ______ 6. ______

What’s New

Problem Opener
There are120 grade 6 learners in Malaya Elementary School. There are 36girls.
This is 30% of the total number of grade 6 learners.

In the situation given above, we can say that: 30% of 120 is 36. It can be described
as:
5
30% of 120 is 36 30% x 120 = 36

Rate (R)

36 is the percentage (P) It is the number or the amount that represents a part
of the whole.
30% is the rate (R) It is the number compares to 100. It usually has either
a percent sign (%) or the word “percent” with it.
120 is the base (B) It is the number that represents the whole or the entire
amount.

Based on this, we can now generate formula for finding the percentage (P),
rate (R) and base (B).

P=RXB

𝑃
R=
𝐵
P
𝑃
B=
𝑅
R B
The triangle above can help you remember the formulas. To find the
percentage (P) cover P; since R and B are next to each other, it means multiplication.
To find the base (B) cover B; since P is over, it means division. And to find rate (R)
cover R; since P is over, it means division.

What is It

Finding the Percentage

You can solve the problem using the formula P = R x B.

Examples:

1. What is 12% of 90?

P=RxB

P = 20% x 90

P = 0.20 x 90

P = 18
6
2. What is 70% of 240? 3. 6% x 350 = N
P = RxB P = RxB
P = 70% x 240 P = 6% x 350
P = 0.70 x 240 P = 0.06 x 350
P = 168 P = 21

Finding the Rate

R=
𝑩
Examples:

1. What percent of 90 is 18?

10
R=
10
R = 0.20

R = 20%

7
What’s More

Identify whether the following problems are looking for the percentage, rate or base.
Then solve for the unknown.

Problem Looking for the Answer

(unknown)
1) What is 15% of 260? percentage 39

2) What percent of 250 is 100?

3) 4.5% x 150 = N
4) Twenty percent (20%) of what
number is 13?
5) N x 620 = 527

What’s New

Problem Opener
In a survey, 40% of the respondents chose volleyball as their favorite sports.
If there were 180 respondents, how many of them chose volleyball?

What is It

To solve the problem, you may follow four steps (Understand, Plan, Solve
and Check).

First Step: Understand

1. What is asked?
 The number of respondents who chose volleyball.
2. What are the given facts?
 A total of 180 respondents. Of the total, 40% chose volleyball.

Second Step: Plan

180

Volleyball: 40% Other sports: 60%

To solve the exact number of respondents who chose volleyball, we can use the
formula P = R x B.

Third Step: Solve

P=RxB

P = 40% x 180
respondents who chose
P = 0.40 x 180

P = 72

1
1
Fourth Step: Check (This is one way to know if your answer is correct)

60% x 180 = 0.60 x 180

= 108 (number of respondents who chose other sports)

72 + 108 = 180 (total number of respondents)

Therefore, our solution is correct.

Examples:

1. Thirty-eight (38) out of 50 grade 6 learners passed the exam. What

percent of the learners failed?

To solve the problem, you may follow four steps (Understand, Plan, Solve and
Check).

First Step: Understand

1. What is asked?
 What percent of the learners got failed?
2. What are the given facts?
 A total of 50 learners. Of the total, 38 passed.

Second Step: Plan

50

Passed: 38
Failed: 12 ?

To solve the exact number of respondents who failed we can use the formula
𝑃
R=
𝐵
Third Step: Solve
𝑃
R=
𝐵
12
R=
80
R = 0.24 Answer: Twenty-four percent

R = 24%

1
2
Fourth Step: Check (This is one way to know if your answer is correct)

76% x 50 = 0.76 x 50

= 38 (number of learners who passed)

24% x 50 = 0.24 x 50

= 12 (number of learners who failed)

38 + 12 = 180 (total number of learners)

Therefore, our solution is correct.

2. Mia spent P450 from her saving to buy her project. If this is 5% of her total
savings, how much did she save in all?
To solve the problem, you may follow four steps (Understand, Plan, Solve and
Check).

First Step: Understand

1. What is asked?
 Total amount of Mia’s savings
2. What are the given facts?
 She spent P450. This is 5%.

Second Step: Plan

Total Savings - ?

P450 – 5% Remaining Money

𝑃
To solve Mia’s total savings, we can use the formula B =
𝑅
Third Step: Solve
𝑃
B=
𝑅
380
B=
8%
B = 0.05

B = 9000

1
3
Fourth Step: Check (This is one way to know if your answer is correct)

5% x 9000 = 0.05 x 9000

= 450 (amount spent)

95% x 9000 = 0.95 x 9000

= 8550 (remaining money)

450 + 8550 = 9000 (total savings)

Therefore, our solution is correct.

3. In a survey conducted by grade 6 learners, 25% of the respondents like

mango, 10% like banana, 20% like avocado and the rest like durian. If
there are a total of 220 respondents, how many of them like durian?
To solve the problem, you may follow four steps (Understand, Plan, Solve and
Check).

First Step: Understand

1. What is asked?
 Number of respondents who like durian.
2. What are the given facts?
 There are 220 respondents. Of these, 25% like mango 10% like
banana and 20% like avocado.

Second Step: Plan

Total number of respondents: 220

Mango – 25% Banana – 10% Avocado – 20% Durian - ?

To solve the exact number of respondents who like durian, we can use the formula
P=RxB
Third Step: Solve

Find the rate: Add 25% + 10% +20% = 55% (100% - 55% = 45% - durian)

P=RxB

P = 45% x 220

P = 0.45 x 220

P = 99

1
4
Fourth Step: Check (This is one way to know if your answer is correct)

45% x 220 = 0.45 x 220

= 99 (respondents who like durian)

25% x 220 = 0.25 x 220

= 55 (respondents who like mango)

10% x 220 = 0.10 x 220

= 22 (respondents who like banana)

20% x 22 = 0.20 x 220

= 44 (respondents who like avocado)

99 + 55 + 22 + 44 = 220 (total number of respondents)

Therefore, our solution is correct.

4. Jean spent 20% of her money to buy a cake for her mother. She then
spent 30% of the remaining money to buy a gift. If she had P1000 at
first. How much money was left to her?

To solve the problem, you may follow four steps (Understand, Plan, Solve and
Check).

First Step: Understand

1. What is asked?
 Amount of money left
2. What are the given facts?
 She had P1000. She spent 20% to buy a cake. Then she spent 30%
of the remaining money to buy a gift.

Second Step: Plan

Money she had at first: P1000

Money spent for the cake: 20% Remaining Money : 80%

Remaining Money : 80%

Money spent for the gift: 30%

Amount of money left: 70%

1
5
To solve the amount of money left, we can use the formula P = R x B. Find
how much money remained after spending for the cake. Then, with the
remaining money, find how much money was left after spending 30% of it.
Third Step: Solve

1. Find the amount of the remaining money.

P=RxB

P = 80% x 1000
P = 0.80 x 1000

P = 800

2. Find the amount of money left.

P=RxB
P = 70% x 800

P = 0.70 x 800

P = 560

Fourth Step: Check (This is one way to know if your answer is correct)

30% x 800 = 0.30 x 800

= 240 (amount of money spent for the gift)

240 + 560 = 800 (amount of remaining money)

20% x 1000 = 0.20 x 1000-

= 200 (amount of money spent for the cake)

200 + 800 = 1000 (amount of money she had at first)

Therefore, our solution is correct.
