AI Project Cycle

In an AI project development, the AI Project Cycle provides us with an appropriate framework

which can lead us towards the goal. This concept provides an organized plan for breaking down
the task of program development into manageable modules. The AI Project Cycle mainly have 5
stages:
Stages(components):

1 Problem Scoping- It refers to the understanding of the problem and finding out various
factors which affect the problem.
2 Data acquisition- It is the process of collection of data accurately and it must be reliable
to work.
3. Data Exploration- Process of refining the gathered data which needs to be arrange
uniformly for better understanding .
4. Modelling- It means to present the results of the modern researches in AI .To build an AI
based project, we need to work around AI models or algorithms.
5. Evaluation-It is the method of understanding the reliability of an AI Model. It is based on
the outputs which is received by feeding the test data to model and comparing the output
with the actual answers.

I. Problem Scoping

Problem scoping is the first stage of AI project cycle. A problem influences many individuals and
many people strive to find solutions. To find any solutions to a problem we need to find out the
root causes of the problem, hence lets understand how the goals of the problem should be
finalized.
 It is the first phase after identifying the problem in developing AI project.
This is we identify the project and set goals that we want our project to
achieve.
 It can be thought as a part of problem-definition phase of AI Project. All other
phases of AI Project cycle follow this phase, without proper problem scoping
everything else will fail.
 Incorrect problem scoping is one of the most common reason for
project failures& delays.

Steps of Problem Scoping
1. Receiving/Identifying the problem.
2. Goal Setting
3. Identification of Stakeholders
4. Identifying the Existing Measures
5. Identifying the Ethical Concerns
How to begin:
 You will be selecting a theme.
 Then look inside the theme and find out topics where problems exist,
Need to understand the vastness of a theme because of which one needs
to go deeper.
 After listing down the topics, you will then find out various problems which exist
under them. These problems will now be very specific as they have been
narrowed down from a broader perspective.
 Now select any one problem out of the ones they scoped and write it as the
goal of tthe project.
 Now you should have clear vision as to what exactly are you looking
forward to

Some themes

Let us take the theme of environment for this chapter to understand how to set the goal for the
project by undergoing various activities.
We know that environment is a very big topic so we need to break it down to know about
various goals of SDG (sustainable development goals)which comes under the domain the
various topic and the environment for as given following:
Let us take climate action topic to list out various problems associated with it.
The change in climate is increasing and its impact is seen and observed by each one of us which

is further impacting everyone's life in more than one way.By doing this activity, we will also
learn about each other by sharing our personal experiences and feelings regarding climate
change.Observe the field up boxes in the given figure to understand the hierarchy of the problem
and explore how the bigger problem can be solved by following various steps to identify,
analyze and find solutions.
We have listed so many problems that comes under climate action. Let us take any one
problem from the list mentioned above as our goal of the project.

The goal taken for the activity is Green House Gas(GHG) emissions.

Activity:
List the goal statement here. Let’s see how we can and help in reducing the greenhouse gas
emission and improve the situation for everyone.

Activity:
To understand and demonstrate more about the impact of Climate Change due to greenhouse
gases, Let us prepare a step by step scoping to this problem using 4Ws Problem Canvas
framework.
this Canvas will help us identify and 4 different parameters for problem scooping.
the four parameters of4Ws problem Canvas are:

Who: this is the first block of the 4w Problem Canvas. It helps as in comprehending and
categorizing who all are getting affected directly or indirectly with the problem. This step
includes the details about the stakeholders who are directly and indirectly affected by the
problems are an important basis of the 4w canvas
What: This is the second block of 4w problem Canvas. it helps in understanding and identifying
the nature of the problem and how do you get to know about this as a problem. These details
should be supported by relevant and valid evidence about the existence of the set problem.

Where: this is the third block of 4 w problem Canvas. Using the previous two blocks you
come to know about what the problem is and who it is affecting. In this block let is concentrate
on where this problem comes from;. the context, situation and location where the problem is
most prominent, plays an important role here.

Why: By now we have the answer to what is the problem, who has the problem and from where the problem
is arising. Let us give the answer as to why we need to solve this and how the solution will improve the
situation for an individual and the society as a whole.Fill in the following questions to get the answer for
why Block of the 4W problem Canvas.
Key terms:
1) Problem Scoping:-Steps that helps to scope the the problem and
finalise the aim of the problem .
2)4 Ws canvas- To solve any problem, break down it into key elements.
It consists of 4 components Who, What, Where, an Why.
 Who- first component tat focuses on the people who are actually
facing the problem.
 What – focuses on what exactly the problem is.
 Where-tells from where the problem is coming.
 Why – to understand what are the benefits solving a problem.
3) Problem statement: A problem statement is a clear description of the issues ,it
includes a vision, issue statement, and method used to solve the problem.
4)Theme- It is a broader term, which has various components further attached to it.

Sample Questions
Fill in the Blanks:
1. _____________provides an organized plan for breaking down the task of program
development into manageable modules.(AI Project cycle)
2. AI project cycle is made possible though ________ essential stages(5)
3. Is the first component of AI project cycle. (problem scoping)
4. defines various steps with the help of which you can scope the problem and
finalize the goal of the problem in your project. problem scoping)
5. To solve any problem, you need to first into for the components to
understand it properly using 4ws problem Canvas. (breakdown)
6. Who block is the first component that focuses on the (the people who are
actually facing the problem)
7. What block focuses on the (the problem, that is what exactly is the
problem)
8. Where block tells--------------------(from where the problem comes)
9. Why block is used to (to understand what are the benefits for solving
such a problem)
Choose the correct answer:
1.Full form of GHG:
(a)Green Hazardous gases
(b) Greenhouse gas
(c) Genesis housing gas
(d) go Here gas
2. Assume that you are working at MyFlight which is a major airlines company and that you have noticed
that the way passengers board your planes is an inefficient use of time and resources. On an average,
the current boarding system wastes about four minutes per boarding. This wastes about 35000 rupees
per day across all flights. The boarding protocols make the company less competitive and thus create
an unfavourable brand image. Using a modified boarding, passengers can board the plane from the sides
rather than from the back to the front. This will eliminate four minutes of waste. Taking this as the
problem, choose which of the following would be the ideal problem statement template.
a) Our passengers have a problem that it takes more time when one has to board the plane.
An ideal solution would be to use different airlines.
b) Our passengers have a problem that the current boarding system wastes time while waiting
in the airport. An ideal solution would be to board the plane before the airline crew gets into
the plane.
c) Our airlines have a problem that the current boarding system wastes four minutes of time
when passengers aboard the plane. An ideal solution would be to board the plane from the
sides rather than from the back to the front.
d) Our airlines have a problem that it takes more time when passengers have to board the
plane. An ideal solution would be to sell the airlines.

Answer The following questions:

1. What is AI project cycle?.Name the different stages.
2. What do you mean by problem scooping?
3. What is meant by theme?
4. List down the steps of Problem Scoping.
5. Name the four components of 4ws problem Canvas? who, what, where, and why.
Define each.
6. What is mean by problem statement?
7. Design 4Ws Problem Canvas for the following issues:
a)As more and more new technologies get into play ,risks will get more concentrated into a
common network. Cybersecurity becomes extremely complicated in such scenarios and
goes beyond the control of firewalls. It will not be able to detect unusual activity and
patterns including the movements of data.
b) Farming is a complex, unpredictable and individual business.Farmers must meet the
changing needs of our planet and the expectations of regulators, consumers, and food
processors .There are increasing pressures from climate change, soil erosion and biodiversity
loss and from consumers’ changing tastes in food and concerns about how it is produced.
