Assignment 3 PDF

This document provides the details for Assignment No. 3 on power system steady state analysis. It includes 4 problems to solve using methods like Gauss-Seidel and Newton-Raphson on simple power systems. Problem 1 involves determining voltages, power, and losses using Gauss-Seidel on a 3 bus system. Problem 2 repeats this for a system where bus 2 is a PV bus. Problem 3 uses Newton-Raphson on a 2 bus system to find voltages. Problem 4 applies Newton-Raphson to a 3 bus system to solve for voltages and powers.

Power System Steady State Analysis

Fall 2023
Assignment No. 3
Due Date: 30/12/2023

Problem No. 1

Fig below shows the single line diagram of a simple 3 bus power system. Data for the system are
given in Table 1 and 2
a. Using the Gauss-Seidel method, determine the phasor values of the voltage at buses 2 and
3.

(Perform only two iterations)

b. Find the slack bus real and reactive power after second iteration
c. Determine the line flows and line losses after second iteration. Neglect line charging
admittance

Problem No. 2

Repeat the Problem 1 considering bus 2 is PV bus. Use same data as given in tables 1 and 2. Fig
below shows the system to be considered now.

Problem No. 3

In the two-bus system shown in fig, bus 1 is a slack bus with pu. A load of 100 MW
and 50 MVAR is taken from bus 2. The line impedance is pu on a base of 100
MVA. Using Newton-Raphson method, obtain the voltage magnitude and phase angle of bus 2.
Start with an initial estimate of pu and Perform two iterations.

Problem No. 4

Fig below shows the single line diagram of a simple 3 bus power system with generation at buses
1 and 2. The voltage at bus 1 is per unit. Voltage magnitude at bus 2 is fixed at 1.05 pu
with a real power generation of 400 MW. A load consisting of 500 MW and 400 MVAR is taken
from bus 3. Line admittances are marked in per unit on a 100 MVA base. For the purpose of hand
calculations, line resistances and line charging susceptances are neglected.
a. Show that the expression for the real power at bus 2 and real and reactive power at bus 3
are

b. Using the Newton-Raphson method, start with the initial estimates of and
, and keeping per unit, determine the phasor values of and .
(Perform only two iterations)
c. Find the slack bus real and reactive power after second iteration
d. Determine the line flows and line losses after second iteration.
