CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
When learning English you will encounter many types of words, one of which is
conditional sentences. The characteristic of this type of sentence is that it begins with the word
"if" in the form of a condition (condition) and an independent clause in the form of a
result/consequence (result) of the requirement. Conditional Sentence Type 1, 2, 3 (Definition,
Formula and Examples) Conditional Sentence means a conditional sentence , this sentence
functions to express something that may or may not happen as expected.
Conditional sentences are used to express the cause and effect of a fact that is

- If I lived in Seoul, tonight I would go to that concert. (In fact I don't live in
Seoul, so I couldn't go to the concert)
- I would play roller coaster every day if I owned a theme park. (In fact I don't
have my own playground, so I can't play roller coasters every day)
4. Conditional Sentence Type 3
Type 3 conditional sentences are used to convey assumptions about events that have
occurred in the past. Because the reality has already happened and cannot be changed,
we can only express assumptions about what would happen if the event turned out
differently from reality.

- If I had left my house earlier, I wouldn't have missed the train. (In reality I left
home late, so I missed the train)
- If she had called me yesterday, I would have been happy. (In fact, yesterday he
didn't call, so I don't feel happy now)
B. Conditional Sentence Function
1. To assume something will happen in the future.
2. To rely on something that is impossible now.
3. To assume something that has happened in the past .
C. Examples of Conditional Sentences.
1. Example of type I
- If I have free time, I will go swimming. (If I have free time, I will go
swimming.)
- If you meet Andy, ask him to call me. (If you meet Andy, ask him to contact
me.)
- If you don't finish your homework, your teacher will be angry.(If you don't
finish your homework, your teacher will be angry.)
- If he doesn't come, I won't be angry. /Unless he comes, I won't be angry.(If you
don't come, I won't be angry.)
- If he comes, I won't be angry.(If he comes, I won't be angry.)
- If they invite you, will you come? (If they invite you, will you come?)
2. Example of type II
- If it rained tomorrow, I would sleep all day. (If it rains tomorrow, I will sleep
all day.)
- If Nisa studied hard, she would pass. (If Nisa studies hard, she will pass.)
- If I had a lot of money, I would buy a sports car. (If I had a lot of money, I
would buy a carsport.)
- If I were a millionaire, I would donate my money to charity. (If I were a
millionaire, I would donate my money to charity.)
- If Nisa studied hard, she wouldn't fail.(If Nisa studies hard, she won't fail.)
- If you had a lot of money, would you buy a sports car?
3. Example of Type III Sentences
- If you had remembered to invite me, I would have attended your party. (If you
remember to invite me, I will be at your party.)
- If I had given the interviewer really good answers, I might have got a higher
position than you. (If I give a really good answer to the interviewer, I might get
a higher position than you.)
- If the waitress had beencareful, she wouldn't have broken many plates.(If the
waiter is careful, he will not break many plates.)
- If he had asked you for forgiveness, would you have forgiven him? (If he
apologized to you, would you forgive him?).
