Hello! future ICT professionals, as computer technicians/engineers you

will likely be assigned to maintain other computer systems outside of your
office or even outside the country and this is possible using the remote
desktop function.

A remote desktop connection allows you to use virtually any computer

or device in order to connect to another computer. ... The one in your office
would be the host (because you're working on it) and the computer at home
would be the client (as it's the one used to establish the connection).

What is Remote Desktop?

The term Remote Desktop refers to a computer that connects remotely

to another, shares control of its mouse and keyboard, and views its display.
Remote Desktop is commonly accessed through port 3389. You can create a
remote desktop connection with an operating system utility, such as the
Remote Desktop included with Windows Professional versions.

Why do we need remote access?

Remote access enables remote users to access files and other system
resources on any devices or servers that are connected to the network at any
time, increasing employee productivity and enabling them to better
collaborate with colleagues around the world.

People use remote desktop access capabilities to do a variety of things,

including the following:

• Access a workplace computer from home or when traveling.

• Access a home computer from other locations.
• Fix a computer problem.
• Perform administrative tasks.
• Demonstrate something, such as a process or a software
application

How to access a home computer from work or school?

If you need to control a remote computer, or you'd like someone else to

control your computer remotely, there are several options available. Below is

a listing of some of the most popular methods of remotely connecting to
another computer for remote access or assistance.

Remote desktop software and services

1. TeamViewer is an online service

that connects two networked
computers running its client
software. A one-time password is
provided on the remote computer
(the one to be controlled), which is
entered on the client computer for
access. The remote computer's
display is shared on your computer,
and you can control its mouse and
keyboard from yours. The software
and service are free to use for
personal use or available for a fee to
corporate customers.

2. LogMeIn is a remote login SaaS. It

provides a secure web interface for
accessing and controlling remote
computers as a cloud service.
LogMeIn does not offer a free service
plan, although a free 14-day trial is
available.

3. GoToMyPC is remote desktop

software designed for "ease-of-use
form over function," that allows you
to remotely view and control another
computer. Acquired by LogMeIn
in 2017, GoToMyPC offers a 7-day
free trial. Client software is available
for Windows, macOS, iOS, and
Android.

4. The original VNC program that

allows users to remotely connect to
other computers running VNC.
RealVNC has three different
versions. The free version that
supports a standard connection, and

the Professional and Enterprise
editions with encryption, One-port
HTTP & VNC, file transfer, and more.

5. TightVNC A free and open source

VNC program that allows you to
remotely connect to another
computer and control it. The
program permits file transfers
between computers and supports
multiple platforms, including
Windows, macOS, Linux, and Unix.

6. Laplink is commercial remote

desktop software that offers one-click
access, secure file transfer, remote
Outlook access, and automatic
synchronization.

7. Windows Remote Desktop

Users of Windows Professional
(Windows 10 Pro, Windows 8 Pro,
etc.) can use Windows Remote
Desktop to remotely access another
Windows computer.

How do I open a Windows Remote Desktop Connection?

To open Remote Desktop in Windows Professional, follow these steps.

1. Click Start.
2. Type remote desktop and click on Remote Desktop connection or press
Enter. Or

1. In the Start menu, click Windows Accessories, then click Remote

Desktop Connection. Or

1. Click Start.
2. Type mstsc and press Enter.

In the Remote Desktop Connection window, type the computer address

you want to remotely connect to and the user name you want to use. For
advanced options, like those shown below, click Show Options at the bottom
of the window.
