 an, an-1, ……,a2, a1, a0 are the coefficients of the polynomial.

 n : the highest exponent, called the degree of polynomial. It is denoted by deg[P(x)].

 anxn : the term with the highest degree, called the leading term

 an : the coefficient of the leading term, called the leading coefficient

 a0 : the term containing no variable, called the constant term

Finding the constant term and the sum of the coefficients of a polynomial

Consider the polynomial p(x)  a0  a 1 x  a2x2   anxn .

1. p(0)  a0  a 1 0  a2  0   an  0  a0  p(0)  a0

p(0) is equal to the constant term of the polynomial.

i
For example,

Constant term of the polynomial P(x  3) is P(0  3)  P(3) .

Constant term of the polynomial Q(2x 3  5x  1) is Q(2  03  5  0  1)  Q(1)
Constant term of the polynomial (3x  6)  R(x  7) is (3  0  6)  R(0  7)  (6)  R(7)

2. p(1)  a0  a 1 1  a2  1   an  1  a0  a 1  a2   an

p(1) is equal to the sum of the coefficients of the polynomial.

For example,

Sum of the coefficients of the polynomial P(x  2) is P(1  2)  P(1) .

Sum of the coefficients of the polynomial Q(x 2  3x  2) is Q(02  3  0  2)  Q(2)
Sum of the coefficients of the polynomial (x 2  3)  R(x  1) is (12  3)  R(1  1)  4  R(0)
