to you to enrich your knowledge or skill of the
lesson learned.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do
iv
What I Need to Know
This module was locally made as you continue your learning process at home and
helps you to:
- discover and understand the purpose of every creation in this world, specifically
the existence of a flower, on how it plays a significant role in the reproduction of
some plants. It will make you believe that regardless of how simple things are,
they can make a big contribution to our environment.
1
What I Know
A. Direction: Identify the main parts of a flower using the jumbled letters given.
B. Direction: Classify the given parts of the flower according to where they belong.

Lesson
The Reproductive Parts of
8 Plants and their Functions
Have you ever wondered why some plants bear flowers while others do not?
Are these flowers just an accessory part of a plant to make it more attractive to
insects? Let’s find the reasons by which they are created for.
In your fourth-grade level, you learned that there are so many types of plants
everywhere. It may differ in its physical attributes like size, shape, color, and smell.
You also learned about the necessary things in order for plants to grow. They need
sunlight, air, and water to make their own food through the process of
photosynthesis.
In this lesson, you will observe and discover that some plants utilize their
flowers to reproduce. Many species of plants contain both male and female parts
within each flower. The male part, the stamen, consists of the anthers at the top,
supported by the filament. The anthers produce pollen which contains the male
gamete. The female part, known as the pistil (carpel), has a stigma at the top where
pollen attaches, and the ovary at the bottom containing ovules, the female gametes.
Between ovary and stigma is the style.
3
That information is barely an overview of the functions of the reproductive
parts in a flower. Together, let us find out how these parts may be similar and at the
same time, be different from other living things when it comes to their functions in
making their young ones.
What’s In
In addition, as you go along with this module, it will help you classify
the flowers whether they are perfect or imperfect; complete or incomplete by
merely identifying their existing parts.
Not only will this improve your cognitive skills but also enrich your
affective domains to be aware of the significant purpose of a flower and to
sincerely care for our Mother Earth.
4
What’s New
In making this lesson more exciting, let’s have an activity first. Have your
notebook and ball pen with you and follow the directions given.
1. Read the poem below to tell you some clues on where to get at least two real
flowers of different kinds at your place. It will be best to have a gumamela as
the other one.
Flowers
Flowers, flowers everywhere,
In the garden, in my hair.
In the vase and at the store,
On the table, on the door.
What a lovely time of year,
Flowers blooming, bringing cheer.
1. After having a quick tour of your garden, even at the store or at the door, as
stated in the poem, carefully observe the parts of gumamela and the other
kind of flower that you found.
2. Gently pull out the petals to expose the male and female parts of the flower.
Lay them on a piece of paper.
3. Locate the female and male parts of the flower.
4. Do the same with the other flower.
5. Compare the parts of gumamela with the other kind.
6. Use this illustration as your guide:
5
Do they have the same parts?
What are the male reproductive parts that can be found in your Flower A
and Flower B?
How about the female reproductive parts present in Flower A and Flower
B?
6
The Female Reproductive Parts
Pistil/Carpel - it is the female reproductive part that is mostly found at the center
of a flower. It includes the stigma, style, ovary, and ovules
Stigma- it is the sticky portion at the top of the style which receives pollen grains,
then lets it germinate, and finally reaches the ovary
Style- it is the narrow and elongated connective tissues between the stigma and
ovary. It is tall enough to trap pollen grains
Ovary- it is the enlarged basal part which contains the ovules or embryo sacs. It
holds the egg cells which are to be fertilized by the sperm from the pollen grains.
Ovules- these are the unfertilized and immature seeds
7
What is It
After knowing that flowers are the sexual reproductive unit of a plant that
functions to produce and house gametes (sex cells). There are also some bases for a
flower to be classified:
lily carnation
8
• imperfect flower - has only either the pistil or stamen alone. Some examples are
the flowers that can be found on melon, cucumber, or squash plant.

What’s More
Let’s have some activities to check what you’ve learned. Follow each
instruction carefully.

Direction: Complete the generalization by choosing the right answers from the
list of words in the box below.
I therefore conclude that the male part of the flower is called the (1) __________
consists of the (2) __________ and (3) __________. While the female part of the flower
is called the (4) __________ consists of the (5) __________ and (6) __________.
A perfect flower has both male and female (7) __________ parts while (8)
__________ flower has only one. On the other hand, a complete flower has a complete
set of (9) __________ and (10) __________ flower lacks one of these parts.

What I Can Do
After being aware of the importance of flowers in every plant, we, as care takers
of the One Above, are responsible for all these creatures.
Find out how you could save Mother Earth from being destroyed. Put a ()
checkmark before the number that shows proper care of plants; (x) cross before the
item that does not.

Assessment
A. Direction: Read the sentences carefully. Choose the letter of the best answer
and write it on the space provided before the number.
