What I Need to Know

This module was locally made as you continue your learning process at home and
helps you to:

- discover and understand the purpose of every creation in this world, specifically
the existence of a flower, on how it plays a significant role in the reproduction of
some plants. It will make you believe that regardless of how simple things are,
they can make a big contribution to our environment.

- provide opportunities for learners to be the young scientists of this generation

through self-discovery and independent learning. It will help you to come out of
new alternatives in accordance with the situation we are all in to.

- develop deeper appreciation in everything that is around us and genuinely care

for all living organisms to become a good role model of this nation.

After completing this module, the learner must be able to:

1. describe the reproductive parts in plants and their functions (S5LT-IIf-6)

2. differentiate perfect flower from imperfect flower
3. identify the distinct characteristics of the complete flower and incomplete
flower
4. understand the importance of flowers in plant reproduction

Lesson
The Reproductive Parts of
8 Plants and their Functions

Have you ever wondered why some plants bear flowers while others do not?
Are these flowers just an accessory part of a plant to make it more attractive to
insects? Let’s find the reasons by which they are created for.

All living organisms, including plants, continuously reproduce themselves.

But unlike humans and animals, some plants can make their offspring by using their
parts such as roots, stems, and leaves. However, in the flowering plants also known
as the angiosperms, they reproduce by means of their external part which is the
flower.

In your fourth-grade level, you learned that there are so many types of plants
everywhere. It may differ in its physical attributes like size, shape, color, and smell.
You also learned about the necessary things in order for plants to grow. They need
sunlight, air, and water to make their own food through the process of
photosynthesis.

In this lesson, you will observe and discover that some plants utilize their
flowers to reproduce. Many species of plants contain both male and female parts
within each flower. The male part, the stamen, consists of the anthers at the top,
supported by the filament. The anthers produce pollen which contains the male
gamete. The female part, known as the pistil (carpel), has a stigma at the top where
pollen attaches, and the ovary at the bottom containing ovules, the female gametes.
Between ovary and stigma is the style.

3
That information is barely an overview of the functions of the reproductive
parts in a flower. Together, let us find out how these parts may be similar and at the
same time, be different from other living things when it comes to their functions in
making their young ones.

What’s In

In your previous lesson, you have tackled the different modes of

reproduction among some animals. With this, identify how the given vertebrates
reproduce. Write A on the blank if the baby animal is born alive and write E if it is
hatched from an egg.

_____1. frog _____6. pig

_____2. horse _____7. dog
_____3. pigeon _____8. turtle
_____4. carabao _____9. lizard
_____5. crocodile _____10. elephant

Notes to the Teacher/Facilitator/Learner

This module focuses on describing the different parts of a flower that

make up the male and female organs. It will give you an idea of the specific
function of each part in order for them to reproduce as stated in the MELC
(Most Essential Learning Competencies) in Science 5.
"describe the reproductive parts in plants, and their functions"(S5LT-IIf-6)

In addition, as you go along with this module, it will help you classify
the flowers whether they are perfect or imperfect; complete or incomplete by
merely identifying their existing parts.

Not only will this improve your cognitive skills but also enrich your
affective domains to be aware of the significant purpose of a flower and to
sincerely care for our Mother Earth.

4
What’s New

In making this lesson more exciting, let’s have an activity first. Have your
notebook and ball pen with you and follow the directions given.

1. Read the poem below to tell you some clues on where to get at least two real
flowers of different kinds at your place. It will be best to have a gumamela as
the other one.

(Note: Be reminded that picking flowers in some areas are prohibited, in

that case, try to ask permission from the owner.)

Flowers
Flowers, flowers everywhere,
In the garden, in my hair.
In the vase and at the store,
On the table, on the door.
What a lovely time of year,
Flowers blooming, bringing cheer.

1. After having a quick tour of your garden, even at the store or at the door, as
stated in the poem, carefully observe the parts of gumamela and the other
kind of flower that you found.
2. Gently pull out the petals to expose the male and female parts of the flower.
Lay them on a piece of paper.
3. Locate the female and male parts of the flower.
4. Do the same with the other flower.
5. Compare the parts of gumamela with the other kind.
6. Use this illustration as your guide:

5
 Do they have the same parts?
 What are the male reproductive parts that can be found in your Flower A
and Flower B?
 How about the female reproductive parts present in Flower A and Flower
B?

The Parts of the Flower

Flowers, as one of the obvious parts of plants, differ in number, size, shape,
and arrangement among species. Having a very significant role in plants, each
reproductive part has its simple yet complicated function. It includes the following:

The Male Reproductive Parts

Stamen- it is the male reproductive and pollen-producing part of a flower. It

includes a slender filament supporting the anther.
Filament- it holds the anther in a high position for the release of pollen and
to make it accessible to insects
Anther- it holds the pollen sacs where the pollen or male gamete is produced

6
The Female Reproductive Parts

Pistil/Carpel - it is the female reproductive part that is mostly found at the center
of a flower. It includes the stigma, style, ovary, and ovules
Stigma- it is the sticky portion at the top of the style which receives pollen grains,
then lets it germinate, and finally reaches the ovary
Style- it is the narrow and elongated connective tissues between the stigma and
ovary. It is tall enough to trap pollen grains
Ovary- it is the enlarged basal part which contains the ovules or embryo sacs. It
holds the egg cells which are to be fertilized by the sperm from the pollen grains.
Ovules- these are the unfertilized and immature seeds

The Accessory Parts

Petals – the most obvious part of the
flower. Most petals are brightly-
colored to attract insects for
pollination. They are collectively
called, “corolla.” They may contain
perfume and nectar glands.
Sepals – these are the outer parts of
the flower that enclose a developing
bud. They support the base of the
flower and protect it when not yet
blooming. They are usually green
and are collectively called “calyx.”
Receptacle – is the enlarged upper
end of a flower stalk where parts of
the flowers are attached.

7
What is It

After knowing that flowers are the sexual reproductive unit of a plant that
functions to produce and house gametes (sex cells). There are also some bases for a
flower to be classified:

Perfect Flower and Imperfect Flower

• perfect flower - has male (stamen) and the female (pistil) reproductive parts. If
both are present in a flower, it is said to be a perfect flower. Examples are
gumamelas, roses, morning glories, carnations, and lilies.

lily carnation

8
• imperfect flower - has only either the pistil or stamen alone. Some examples are
the flowers that can be found on melon, cucumber, or squash plant.

male squash flower female squash flower

Complete Flower and Incomplete Flower

• complete flower – from the name itself, it has a complete set of structures.
These structures are the receptacle, sepals, petals, stamen, and pistil

• incomplete flower - lacks one of the said structures

Follow-up Questions:

• Can a perfect flower be incomplete? Why?

Yes, because a flower only needs to have both the male and female parts to
be called as such. While having the stamen and the pistil as a perfect flower, it
may be lacking one or more parts and get considered as an incomplete flower.

• Can a complete flower be imperfect? Why?

No. for a flower to be complete, it needs to have all the structures including
the reproductive and accessory parts. On the contrary, an imperfect flower has
only either the pistil or stamen; therefore, it cannot be a complete flower.

9
