Case Study: E-Commerce Product Analysis

Scenario:
Orange Inc. is an e-commerce company that was launched in 2015. Since then, they have their
a range of operations in multiple districts of the country.

They have been delivering orders in the commercial as well as retail sectors. In recent years,
their products demonstrated exceptional growth and they want analysis on their new products to
be launched soon in the market.

They have hired you as a Data Scientist in their data consulting team which offers
services across various departments such as sales, analytics, growth, etc.

They have given you a sample of data from their databases. You have to work with the teams to
help them with some of their pain points like pricing analysis, product growth, product sales, etc.
as well as help them work on a new set of financial analyses and do target market/product fit
analysis.

In Metabase, inside the “mysql” database, you can find the specified tables named as
products_pw, orders_pw, customers_pw, cities_pw

Section 1

The company wants to expand its operations in a given state. Thus the company needs to
analyze the current dynamics of the state along with the targeted products for its audience.

Q1. Identify all the cities in which the company has its current operations.
Q2. As the company is focused on Hotels and Corporate business, Identify all the product
names in the Housekeeping and Office supplies category.
Q3. Also, Identify all the product names common in Q2. product categories.
Q4. As the company wants to expand its operations in Karnataka, Identify the count of total
customers present in this state.
Q5. Identify the product categories currently consumed in the state mentioned in Q4.
Q6. Identify the maximum purchased product category by the customers between the ages of
20-25 years in Karnataka.

Section 2

The company wants to analyze its product-market fit and wants to explore its product in terms of
price, selling ability, and revenue generation.
1. Identify the individual states the company is currently operating in.
2. Identify the unique product categories the company is currently operating in.
3. Identify the top 5 expensive products this company sells among all its product lines.
4. Identify the top 5 selling products by this company.
5. Identify the top 5 revenue-generating products of this company along with their price
and quantity. Rank them from the most revenue-generating to the least revenue-
generating products.
6. The company wants to drop 2 products with the least revenue. Suggest the company
which can be those products based on your data analysis.

Based on the above analysis, comment on the product range of the company.
Section 3

The sales team is interested in analyzing best-selling products as per the category type and
also based on demographic.
1. Identify the product category with the most number of products available.
2. Identify the maximum quantity sold for each unique product.
3. Identify the top-selling product in each city.
4. Identify the top 5 cities that did the maximum sales.
5. Identify all the unique product names having at least more than 50 products sold.

Section 4

A product analysis is performed on the deep analysis of pricing and Target Addressable
Audience.

Essentially, the product team wants to understand the consumer behavior on the pricing along
with the demographic testing with the age group effect on the product.

To ensure the above analysis, Please answer the following questions:


1. List out all the product names which are sold along with their prices and quantity sold.
2. List out all the product names and the respective cities to which they are sold.
3. List out all the product names with their prices and the customer name it’s sold (if any).
4. List out all the customer names with their age and the product category they purchased
(if present in the database)
5. List all the combinations of customer name, customer age, city, state, product name,
product price, and quantity sold for the product by that company.
6. List the combinations of customer age and quantity sold to him/her by that company.
Handle all the null values as age to be 20 and quantity to be 0 in case of null values.

Based on the above questions, please highlight the insights you can form analyzing the data on
the product categories, the geography of sales, and the age group interests of the company.

Section 5

The company wants to analyze the range of age groups in each city.
1. List all combinations of order, city, and product details from the data given.
