Experiment 7

This experiment aims to understand how a flow transducer can function as a position transducer by measuring the voltage output of a flow sensor at different flow rates. The procedure involves setting up a water flow system through a tank and pump, calibrating the flow sensor to output 0V at 0 flow and 9V at 6 liters/minute, and recording the sensor voltages that correspond to different flow rates adjusted using valves. The recorded voltages will then be plotted against flow rate to characterize the flow transducer's response as a position transducer.

Experiment 7

FLOW SENSOR

❖ OBJECTIVES - To understand the characteristic

of a flow transducer as position
transducer.

❖ PRESREQUISITES - Knowledge of the main physical laws

- Operating principle of the flow
transducer

❖ METHODOLOGY - Guided experience

1
Procedure

1) Connect, through leads, pin No. 16 of the PUMP DIRIVER to the bush of SET
POINT 1, pin No. 17 to adjacent bush and pin No. 18 to its adjacent bush

2) Check if the water level in the tank is 10cm.

3) Press the main switch (ON)

4) Start the pump regulating the voltage on SET POINT 1 at 10V

5) Regulate the valve MANUAL VALVE to read on the FLOW METER 6 1t/min: if the
flow is slightly lower, regulate MANUAL VALVE to reach the value closely higher.

6) Start the pump regulating the voltage on SET POINT 1 at 10V and at the same time
start the chronometer.

7) Read the value shown in the FLOW METER and write it down.

8) Wait until the water level reaches 13cm, stop the chronometer and stop the pump.

9) Write down the value read on the chronometer.

10) Slightly turn counter-clockwise the knob NEEDLE VALVE and or the knob DRAIN
VALVE to bring the water level back to 10cm and close the valves.

11) Repeat the procedure from step 4: the two values read on the chronometer must be
equal.

12) Put OFF the main switch.

13) Calculate the flow of the pump and verify that the value is equal to the value read on
the flow meter.

a. NOTE: Diameter of the tank 18.4 cm

i. Volume of the tank = area of the base x height
a. = 265.904 x 3 = 797.713 cm3
ii. Flow = Volume/time (cm /sec)
iii. 1 cm3/sec = 3.6 1/h

14) Connect pins No. 5 and 6 of the flow sensor FLOW to its adjacent pins of the relevant
interface

15) Insert one terminal of the digital voltmeter, set in dc, in pin No. 11 and the other one
in the earth bush.

16) Regulate the trimmer OFFSET to read the value 0V on the multimeter.

17) Put OFF the main switch.

18) Slightly turn counter-clockwise the knob NEEDLE VALVE and/or the valve DRAIN
VALVE.

19) Start the pump regulating the voltage on set point 1 at 10V

20) Regulate the trimmer GAIN to read on the multimeter the value 9V, in case the flow
read and calculated is 6 lt/min.

21) Regulate the valve MANUAL VALVE for all the value of flow listed in Table 7.1
and write down the voltage values read on the voltmeter.

22) Put OFF the main switch.

23) Close the valves NEEDLE VALVE and DRAIN VALVE.

24) Remove all the connections.
