PDPR Online Learning

(11 August 2021, Wednesday)

Class : 6F
CHAPTER 1 : FUNCTIONS
Duration : 1/2 hour (10.00 am to 10.30 am)

Learning Outcome:
DEFINITION & TYPES OF FUNCTIONS
(Inverse Functions)
DEFINITION & TYPES OF FUNCTIONS
Inverse Functions
Notes:
1. Inverse functions only exist for one-to-one functions.
2. If f is a one-to-one
 The domain of 𝑓 −1 is the range of f.
 The range of 𝑓 −1 is the domain of f.
3. The graphs of f and 𝑓 −1 are symmetrical about the straight line y = x.
For example:
4. Horizontal line test : A function is one-to-one if and only if each
horizontal line intersects the graph of the function at most one point.
Question 1

Determine whether the following functions are one to one

function, giving reason for your answer :

(a) f : x → ln (x + 1) , x ≥ 0 (b) g : x → 4 ,x≥1

1+ x2

(c) h : x → 2x – x2 , x > 0
Answer (a)
Determine whether the following functions are one to one function,
giving reason for your answer :
(a) f : x → ln (x + 1) , x ≥ 0
y

f(x) = ln (x + 1), x ≥ 0

x
0

Since y=k cuts f(x) only at one point,

∴ 𝑓 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑒 − 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.
Answer (b)

(b) g:x→ 4 ,x≥1

2
1+ x

Since y=k cuts g(x) only at one point,

∴ 𝑓 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑒 − 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑛𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.
Answer (c)

(c) h : x → 2x – x2 , x > 0
Question 2
For each of the following, state its range and determine whether its’ inverse exists. If exists,
sketch the curve and its inverse on the same axes. Then, express its inverse in a similar form :

(a) f : x → x2 , x > 0 (b) h : x → 1 + 2 , x > 0

x
(c) f : x → x2 + 1 , x  (d) f : x → 4 – (x – 2)2, 0 ≤ x ≤ 4

(e) g : x → 1 – (x + 1)2, –1 < x < 2 (f) h : x → (x – 2)2 + 4, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1

(g) f : x → 4 , –1 < x < 1 (h) g : x → 2 ,x

x2 − 1 1 + x2

(i) h:x→ 4 , x≥0 (j) f : x → x + 3 , x < 3

2 + x2

(k) g : x → x + 1 , x  (l) h:x→ x ,x≥0
