Worksheet - Magnetic Circuits

This document contains 5 questions regarding magnetic circuits and inductors: 1. It asks to calculate the reluctance of the core and gap, as well as the total flux, flux linkages, and inductance for a given magnetic circuit with a single air gap. 2. It asks to calculate the number of turns and current required to achieve a given inductance and flux density for the same magnetic circuit. 3. It asks to calculate the magnetic flux in each column of an iron core and the induction in two air gaps, given the dimensions, permeability, number of turns and current for a magnetic circuit with two air gaps. 4. 1. A magnetic circuit with a single air gap is shown in Fig. The core dimensions are: Cross-
sectional area, Ac = 1.8 × 10-3 m2, Mean core length, lc = 0.6 m, Gap length, g = 2.3 x 10-3
m, N = 83 turns. Assume that the core is of infinite permeability and neglect the effects of
fringing fields at the air gap and leakage flux. (a) Calculate the reluctance of the core R e
and that of the gap Rg. For a current of i = 1.5 A, calculate (b) the total flux, ϕ, (c) the
flux linkages, λ of the coil, and (d) the coil inductance L.

2. Consider the magnetic circuit in the fig with the dimensions of the circuit in Q.1.
Assuming infinite core permeability, calculate (a) the number of turns required to achieve
an inductance of 12 mH and (b) the inductor current which will result in a core flux
density of 1.0 T.
3. Figure shows an iron core whose relative permeability is 2000. The dimensions of the
core are shown in the figure. The width of the core is 7 cm. The lengths of the air gaps
are 0.05 cm and 0.07 cm, respectively. The cross section in the air gaps is 5% bigger than
that of the iron core. The coil has 300 turns and its current is 1.0 A. Determine the
magnetic flux in each column of the iron core and the magnetic induction in the air gaps.

4. Find the currents I1 and I2 and the output voltage Vo in the network shown in Fig.

5. The network shown in Fig. operates at 60 Hz. Compute the energy stored in the mutually
coupled inductors at time t = 10 ms.
