Philippines Population
Census Year
(in millions)
2010 93.14
2019 108.27
Table 1
(Philippine Statistics Authority, 2014).
Solution:
From Table 1 above, we can assume that the survey started in 2010.
This means that it is year 0 with an initial population of 93.14
million. Write this as an ordered pair (0, 93.14).
Next, is the survey in 2019 which means at year 9 the population
grows to 108.27 million. The corresponding ordered pair is (9,
108.27).
Use the simplest form of exponential function 𝑦 = 𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏 # and plug
in the first ordered pair. Thus,
𝑦 = 𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏 # ; (0, 93.14)
⇒ 93.14 = 𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏0 ⇒ 𝑎 = 93.14
Substitute the value of a and the other ordered pair.
𝑦 = 𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏 # ; (9, 108.27), 𝑎 = 93.14
Math 5|Page 1 of 5
⇒ 108.27 = (93.14)/𝑏9 0
108.27 9 108.27
⇒ 𝑏9 = ⇒𝑏=1 ≈ 1.02
93.14 93.14
Hence, the function is 𝑦 = 93.14(1.02)# .
Example 2
A man wants to invest a certain amount of money. He would like
the value of his investment to double in 10 years. Write an equation
that can be used to find r, the annual rate of interest required.
Assume interest is compounded annually. What will be his money
after 12 years if he invests ₱20 000?
Solution:
From the previous lesson in our Algebra course, we learned that the
formula for compound interest is
$ %"
𝐴 = 𝑃 51 + % 7
where A is the accumulated amount, P is the principal or
capital, r is the rate of interest per annum, s is the number of
conversion each year, and t is the time in years.
Since the investment is doubled in 10 years, we can use any amount
for the capital or principal. Thus, we can write
$ 1(10)
2 = 1 51 + 17 ⇒ 2 = (1 + 𝑟)10
Therefore, the equation is
(1 + 𝑟)10 = 2.
Solving for r we get,
10 10
1 + 𝑟 = √2 ⇒ 𝑟 = √2 − 1 ⇒ 𝑟 ≈ 0.0718 = 7.18%
$ %"
Using 𝐴 = 𝑃 51 + 7 ,
%
0.0718 1(12)
𝐴 = 20000 51 + 1 7 = 20000(1.0718)12 = 45961.59
Hence, the man will receive around ₱45 962 after 12 years.
Example 3
In 2012, 50 tarsiers were introduced into a wildlife center in Bohol,
Philippines. By 2018, the population grows to 150 tarsiers. If the
population grows exponentially, write a function representing the
situation.
Solution:
Let x be the number of years after 2012, 𝑇(𝑥) be the population after
x years.
Using (0, 50),
𝑦 = 𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏 # ⇒ 50 = 𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏0 ⇒ 𝑎 = 50
Find the value of b using the other point, (6, 150) by substituting to
the formula. Thus, the equation becomes
150 = 50𝑏6 .
Solving for b we have,
150 6 150
𝑏6 = 50
⇒ 𝑏 = = 50 ≈ 1.2009
Hence, the function is 𝑇(𝑥) = 50(1.2009)# .
The graph of our model is shown below.
Math 5|Page 2 of 5
The graph tells us that at year 0, the initial population of tarsiers is
50 and it grows to 150 tarsiers after 6 years. The function’s domain
is [0, +∞) and the range of the function is [50, +∞).
Example 3
A radioactive substance contained in a bone is 160 mg but after some
time, it reduces to 90 mg. If the half-life of this radioactive substance
is 5560 years, write an equation that models this situation. How old
is the bone?
Solution:
Using exponential decay formula, we write the equation that models
the situation which is of the form
!
𝐴 = 𝐴0 2)"
Substitute the given information to the formula above to express the
model function.
!
90 = 160(2))5560
Simplify the expression using logarithms.
!
𝑙𝑜𝑔 90 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 160(2))5560
"
𝑙𝑜𝑔 90 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 160 − 5560 𝑙𝑜𝑔 2
"
𝑙𝑜𝑔 2 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔 160 − 𝑙𝑜𝑔 90
5560
" *+, 160 ) *+, 90
5560
= *+, 2
5560(*+, 160 ) *+, 90)
𝑡= *+, 2
𝑡 = 4615.2170
Therefore, the bone is about 4615 years old.

2. The population of a certain animal species decreases at a rate
of 3.5% per year. You have counted 80 of the animals in the
